Study of Applying UPFC To Power System Optimal Congestion Management

Hung, Wen-cha 30 June 2004 (has links)
Congestion is always a serious problem in power system. In order to solve the kind of thorny problem, experts employ various methods for relieving congested difficulties. There are many new power-electronics-based devices using to solve the difficult problems recently. Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is the most powerful device of these devices. The UPFC is capable of providing not only active and reactive control but also adaptive voltage amplitude control. By way of UPFC, power flow in power system is changed. Congestion problems are solved easily. A new model is proposed in this thesis to improve existing power-based model by using the Norton Equivalent Theorem. The proposed model can be integrated with the Equivalent Current Injection (ECI) power flow model easily. By ECI algorithm, it is much quickly and precisely to implement power flow calculations. By making use of Genetic algorithm (GA), the optimal location of UPFC in power system will be obtained. In the solution process, GA will be integrated with the nonlinear interior point OPF to select the optimal control parameters and UPFC sitting to solve congestion problems. Tests under MATLAB (The Math Works, Inc.) will be used to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in solving a modified OPF problem for real congestion control under deregulation.

Study of the UPFC Model Based on the Current-Injection Concept

Wang, Mu-Chi 28 June 2002 (has links)
The unified power controller (UPFC) is, the most comprehensive device emanated so far from the FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) initiative. Installation of UPFC to control power flow has become an emerging topic in today¡¦s power industry, especially the deregulated market. By the use of UPFC, a high-speed and low-cost power electronic device, the line flows can be controlled in such a way that thermal limits are kept, losses minimized, stability increased, and contractual requirements fulfilled without violating the economic generation dispatch. To coupe with control signals to attain various control capabilities, it can be used to control both the active and reactive powers and voltage magnitudes altogether. This thesis aims to study static UPFC models for power flow calculations. Basic operation of UPFC will be briefly reviewed. A new UPFC current-based model is proposed in this paper to improve existing power-based model by using the Norton Equivalent Theorem. The proposed model can be integrated with the ECI power flow model easily. The equivalent relationships between the new model and the traditional model will also be investigated. And the proposed current-based UPFC model will provide better convergent characteristics. The Evolutionary Programming (EP) method was also proposed in this research to solve the UPFC control parameters to attain a global optimum. EP is an artificial intelligence process including reproduction, mutation, competition, and selection. Being a stochastic method, EP can avoid the local convergence problem and provide a better opportunity to reach the global or near global optimum. Using the test cases of 5-bus and Taipower systems, the test results proves that the new UPFC new model can successfully control active power and reactive power, and voltage magnitudes simultaneously with an effective process and a feasible solution.

Investigation of small signal dynamic performance of IPFC and UPFC devices embedded in AC networks

Jiang, Shan 20 January 2011 (has links)
This thesis proposes the small signal model for the Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC). Using this model, the damping performance of the IPFC with different power system configuration is investigated and also compared with the AC Transmission System (FACTS) based controllers such as the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). The IPFC and the UPFC in constant power control mode can be viewed as effectively cutting the connected transmission line. This change on the structure of the network results in a significant change on the small signal stability. This thesis also addresses issues regarding the different levels of models that are required for the investigation of the behavior of FACTS. An effective validation approach that uses a minimum sized demonstration platform is proposed. This platform is small enough for detailed EMTP validation, yet large enough to exhibit the range of transient electrical and electromechanical behavior which is the focus for FACTS devices. To demonstrate the approach, the small signal models of the system embedded with the IPFC and the UPFC are developed respectively. The results obtained from small signal analysis are validated with EMTP-type simulation and show a close agreement.

Hierarchical Fuzzy Control of the UPFC and SVC located in AEP's Inez Area

Maram, Satish 09 June 2003 (has links)
To reinforce its Inez network, which was operated close to its stability limits, American Electric Power (AEP) undertook two major developments, one being the installation of a Static Var Compensator (SVC) in November, 1980 and the other one being the installation of the world's first Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) in 1998. The controllers in the system include the Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs) of the generators, the controllers of the SVC, and UPFC. To coordinate the control actions of these controllers and prevent voltage instability resulting from their fighting against each other, a two level hierarchical control scheme using fuzzy logic has been developed and its performance was assessed via simulations. The second level of the hierarchy determines the set points of the local controllers of the AVRs, SVC, and UPFC and defines the switching sequences of the capacitor banks, the goal being to maximize the reactive reserve margins of the Inez subsystem. Numerous simulations were carried out on this system to determine the actions of the fuzzy controller required to prevent the occurrence of voltage collapse under double contingency. Simulations have revealed the occurrence of nonlinear interactions between the machines resulting in stable limit cycles, nonlinear oscillations undergoing period doubling leading to chaos and possible voltage collapse. The proposed fuzzy scheme provides a fast, simple and effective way to stretch the stability limit of the system for double contingency conditions, up to 175 MW in some cases. This is a significant increase in the system capacity. / Master of Science

The objective of this work is to present the possibility to provide damping to low frequencies oscillations of the electrical power systems by FACTS devices (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System): TCSC (Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor) and UPFC (Unified Power Flow Controller). This is developed and implemented using the Power Sensitivity Model for multimachine systems. Afterwards, the TCSC and UPFC devices are introduced as well as the controllers. Results are presented according to the evolution of the models that represent the FACTS devices, i.e., it starts with a fixed compensation, passing through a first order dynamic model and finally, it is included a POD controller (Power Oscillation Damping). It is also analyzed the inclusion of local and remote signals for the input of the POD controller. Besides, results obtained by classical techniques of introducing damping by supplementary signals (Power Systems Stabilizer – PSS) are shown. The project of POD and PSS controllers are based on the Phase Compensation Method using the classical control theory. Participation Factor like eigenvalues, eigenvectors and transfer function residues are used as index to examine the best allocation of the POD and PSS controllers on the electrical power systems.

Control Lyapunov Functions : A Control Strategy for Damping of Power Oscillations in Large Power Systems

Ghandhari, Mehrdad January 2000 (has links)
In the present climate of deregulation and privatisation, theutilities are often separated into generation, transmission anddistribution companies so as to help promote economic efficiencyand encourage competition. Also, environmental concerns,right-of-way and cost problems have delayed the construction ofboth generation facilities and new transmission lines while thedemand for electric power has continued to grow, which must bemet by increased loading of available lines. A consequence isthat power system damping is often reduced which leads to a poordamping of electromechanical power oscillations and/or impairmentof transient stability. The aim of this thesis is to examine theability of Controllable Series Devices (CSDs), such as Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC)   Controllable Series Capacitor (CSC)   Quadrature Boosting Transformer (QBT)   for improving transient stability and damping ofelectromechanical oscillations in a power system. For these devices, a general model is used in power systemanalysis. This model is referred to as injection model which isvalid for load flow and angle stability analysis. The model isalso helpful for understanding the impact of the CSDs on powersystem stability. A control strategy for damping of electromechanical poweroscillations is also derived based on Lyapunov theory. Lyapunovtheory deals with dynamical systems without input. For thisreason, it has traditionally been applied only to closed-loopcontrol systems, that is, systems for which the input has beeneliminated through the substitution of a predetermined feedbackcontrol. However, in this thesis, Lyapunov function candidatesare used in feedback design itself by making the Lyapunovderivative negative when choosing the control. This controlstrategy is called Control Lyapunov Function (CLF) for systemswith control input. / QC 20100609
