Varactor-based reactive network design for ESPAR phased array and antenna applications

Nelson, Paul Jeffrey 01 January 2008 (has links)
Widespread adoption of phased array technologies has been hindered primarily by the high cost associated Transmitter/Receiver (T/R) modules. In conventional phased arrays, these vital elements often comprise up to fifty-percent of the entire array's expense. Recent development of a new type of phased array - the Electronically Steerable Passive Array Radiator (ESPAR) - is underway at laboratories around the globe. This innovative concept utilizes mutual coupling to excite neighboring (passive) elements placed in the near field of a center-driven (active) radiator. Using this method, T/R modules are only required for the active radiators. The radiation pattern of an ESP AR is controlled electronically by means of variable reactive loading of the passive antenna elements. In order to attain the full range of beam steering offered by this array, a broad range of reactance is required at the input port of each passive antenna. This thesis presents a varactor-based reactive network design that can accurately and reliably produce a wide range of reactance. The purpose of this research was to design a network compatible with the requirements of the ESP AR phased array, which is in development at the Antennas, RF, and Microwave Integrated Systems CARMI) laboratory at the University of Central Florida. To this end, an elaborate survey weighing different varactor-based reactive network and DC bias tee designs was conducted. This study took into account the practical issues and limiting factors that arose during design and implementation of such a network. While this specific network design was constrained to operate at 3 GHz, the proposed design methodology may be applied to realize reactive networks at other frequencies. This flexibility allows incorporation into similar ESPAR's and a plethora of other relevant devices.

Design of New, Compact and Efficient Microstrip Filters for 5G Wireless Communications

Al-Yasir, Yasir I.A. January 2020 (has links)
The electromagnetic spectrum is becoming increasingly congested due to the rapid development of wireless and mobile communication in recent decades. New, compact and efficient passband filters with multi-functions and good performance are highly demanded in current and future wireless systems. This has also driven considerable technological advances in reconfigurable/tunable filter and filtering antenna designs. In light of this scenario, the objectives of this thesis are to design, fabricate and measure efficient, compact, multi-standard, and reconfigurable/tunable microstrip resonator filters and study the integration of the resonators with patch antennas. As a passive design, a compact dual-band filter is implemented to cover 2.5 to 2.6 GHz and 3.4 to 3.7 GHz for 4G and 5G, respectively. Another design is also presented with the advantages of a wide passband of more than 1 GHz. Conversely, new and compact reconfigurable filters are designed using varactor and PIN diodes for 4G and 5G. The proposed filters are tunable in the range from 2.5 to 3.8 GHz. The bandwidth is adjustable between 40 and 140 MHz with return losses between 17 to 30 dB and insertion loss of around 1 dB. Also, the thesis investigates the design of cascaded and differentially-fed filtering antenna structures. The cascaded designs operate at 2.4 and 6.5 GHz and have a relatively wide-band bandwidth of more than 1.2 GHz and a fractional bandwidth of more than 40%. For the differentially-fed structures, good performance is achieved at the 3.5 GHz with a high realized gain of more than 7.5 dBi is observed. / European Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions) under grant agreement H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016 SECRET-722424.

Electronically adjustable bandpass filter

Terblanche, Phillip 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis presents the study, analysis and design of electronically tunable filters, that can be tuned over a wide frequency range (20-500MHz), for use in a direct sampling receiver. The final design does not have to be a single filter, but may be comprised of a filter bank which enables switching between the filters. The band of interest is too low to use normal transmission lines and lumped elements have to be used. Different topologies that can implement Coupled Resonator filters with lumped elements are investigated. Devices that can be used for tuning are also investigated and varactor diodes are found to be the most suitable tuning devices currently available. Two filters, one at the high-end and one at the low-end of the band, were designed and built, both using varactor diodes. These filters perform well in terms of tuning range, but achieving low losses with current technologies in this band remains difficult.

Pistono, Emmanuel 11 July 2006 (has links) (PDF)

Synthesis and design of tunable microwave bandpass filters using planar patch resonators / Synthesis and Design of Tunable Microwave Bandpass Filters using Planar Patch Resonators

Lacorte Caniato Serrano, Ariana Maria da Conceição 02 May 2011 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is the design and synthesis of tunable bandpass filters at microwave frequencies using planar patch resonators. A methodology for the design and synthesis of tunable patch filters is developed and applied to two filters with triangular and circular topologies. The methodology provides techniques to extract the coupling scheme that models the filter behavior and the necessary equations for calculating the corresponding coupling matrix. Then, the theoretical filter response resulting from the analysis of the coupling matrix coefficients is compared to the results of complete simulations. The complete simulations combine the results of the 3D electromagnetic (EM) simulation of the filter layout with the results of the electrical simulation of the tuning devices, represented by their lumped elements equivalent model. This allows the correct model of the tuning effect and the definition of the tuning possibilities and limits. In order to validate the methodology, the tunable patch filters are fabricated using Microwave Integrated Circuit (MIC) technology on flexible substrates. The minimum dimensions are greater than 0.5 mm, ensuring a low cost fabrication process.
