Rückertz, Robert, Persson, Magnus January 2006 (has links)

The capital of Sweden, Stockholm has in the recent years begun to discuss the option to build a new major arena for sports and events. The vision is a multifunctional arena with a capacity of 55.000 to 60.000 seats. In Sweden today only Gothenburg has got an arena (Ullevi) with that ability. Ullevi is today the centre for sport events and musical events. The prospect for Stockholm is to get a similar opportunity as Gothenburg with the visualised arena. The fact is that Stockholm today loose events in favour towards Gothenburg.

This geographical study takes its aim to comprehend how an arena makes spatial effects in local, regional and national levels in economic geographical perspectives.

In a deeper perspective, what kind of effects can the visionary arena in terms of concurrence with other arenas in the vicinities and how the arena effects its locality, its region and the nation.

The theories that have been implemented in the study are the Central place theory, the localisation and regional development theories and Porters Diamond. In the study recent and older science of sports geography, science of events and city regeneration is treated. There is also a comprehensive background investigation of the city of Gothenburg and Stockholm and their development from industrial cities towards becoming more event based cities.

The study is mainly based on three interviews. The interviews are made with Stockholm town, The Swedish Football Association and Solna town. It is among these actors that the visionary arena plans has its strongest expressions. Thru the interviews the study show a couple of different themes and results. For example there are competitor like factors in their visions. They are looking to compete both against the western side of Europe thru the Ullevi arena, and with the eastern side of Europe, mainly the Baltic Sea area, with the new arena in Stockholm. An other factor is the vision to strengthen the status of Stockholm as a leading city of events.

A Narrative Analysis of the Real Estate Broker

Huang, Ling-li 05 July 2010 (has links)
According to the well-known human resource service provider, Internet¡¦s 104¡¥s surveys indicate that the most popular job vacancy with freshmen whom enterprises want to recruit is that of salesperson. Salespeople have long working hours and high performance pressure, resulting in a high turnover rate, which is the reason why enterprises constantly need more salespeople. Besides this, according to reviews of the real estate industry, half of real estate brokers quit their job after having worked for a mere six months. Why do so many brokers quit their job? And, what¡¦s the difference between the broker who is still in the industry and the one out of it? What skills do the brokers need to prosper in the industry? This research uses narrative analysis to explore the views of real estate brokers on work, the difference between the incumbent brokers and the quit-forever brokers, the reasons why real estate brokers quit their job, and the skills the incumbent brokers need to live on in this industry. The results of this research are as follows: First, the views of real estate brokers on work. Second, although the incumbent brokers and the quit-forever brokers have the same views on the work, but they have different attitudes towards their work. Third, the reason they quit their job is usually related to ethics. Forth, the skills of the incumbent brokers appear to be inadequate. Fifth, incumbent brokers develop their skills through learning from experience. (learning on the job).

Research of Situation and Strategy Formulation

Chang, Li-Chung 11 June 2004 (has links)
Views of strategy formulation can be mainly divided into two categories. One is I-O(Industrial Organization), the other one is RBV(Resource Based View)(Hitt, Ireland and Hoskisson, 1999¡G2003¡FSe-Hwa Wu, 2000¡FJoseph Shyu, 2000¡FCher-Min Fong, 2001¡FMing-Jer Tang, 2003).Both of vews have each suitable situation. If strategy is formulated from single view, it will cause defects (Robbins, 2003). Recent years, scholars provide solutions from integration¡Bcontingency and dynamic. However, thesis combines 3 features is still few. This paper attempts to find combined views to suit different situation in a dynamic framework. The research provides a static framework included¡G(1) If the contingency of inside and outside company are stable, companies ought to choose ¡uposition-based view¡v; (2)If the contingency of outside company are not stable but stable contingency of inside company, companies ought to choose ¡uvision-based view¡v; (3)If the contingency of outside company are not stable but stable contingency of inside company, companies ought to choose ¡uenvironment-based view¡v; (4)If the contingency of inside and outside company are both not stable, companies ought to choose ¡uresource-based view¡v; (5)If the contingency of inside and outside company are changing smoothly with controllable situation, companies ought to choose ¡uconstruction-based view¡v. The research provides a dynamic framework. From the long term view, a company needs to adjust itself to match the changing of situation in order to have sustainable competitive advantage.

"What's Preached" vs. "What's Practiced": Language Views and Family Language Practices in Russian-English Bilingual Families

Kradinova, Larisa January 2007 (has links)
Although numerous studies have been done on language ideologies, bilingualism and effects of second language socialization on bilinguals' conceptualization in both languages, these three areas of research are almost never brought together in one study. This study is an attempt to investigate language views of adult Russian-English bilinguals and whether there are patterned differences in conceptualization of these views depending on the language chosen for discussion. The study also inspects whether the articulated language views are accurate predictors of actual literacy practices in Russian-English bilingual families and parental choices of maintaining/not-maintaining Russian in their children. Since the frames of reference are so different in Russia/Ukraine (where the participants came from) and the United States, the language views articulated by bilingual participants are compared to those expressed by Russian/ Ukrainians and Americans to see how the participants' views are influenced by the process of second language socialization.

Freedom, democracy, and nationalism in the political thought of Pierre Elliott Trudeau: a conversation with Canadians

Arrison, Sonia 05 1900 (has links)
Pierre Elliott Trudeau's ideas on liberal democracy and political philosophy are relevant to Canadian life. He is a modern liberal democrat with a vision of the 'Good' society - what he terms the Just Society. The values of a Just Society are numerous, but perhaps, the most important are freedom, equality, and tolerance. These values are core to his theory and are often revealed in his battle against nationalism. Trudeau is radically opposed to notions of ethnic nationalism, such as French Canadian and Aboriginal nationalism, but he supports a type of civic nationalism within a federal, pluralistic system. In his dislike for nationalism, Trudeau is similar to Lord Acton, who has had a major influence on his work. Trudeau also shows thought similar to John Locke, J.S. Mill, I. Berlin, de Tocqueville, Publius, and John Rawls.

An analysis and evaluation of Ivan Illich's social and educational philosophy in the light of his early development and the major critiques of his theories /

Cyr, George January 1990 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to try to bring some clarity and perspective into the controversy generated by Ivan Illich's theory of the necessity for a deschooled society. Furthermore it attempts to elaborate on how Illich's concepts originated and evolved. In this respect, it strives to present all of the elements which have had an impact upon Illich's intellectual formation and his subsequent religious, social, and educational philosophy. / The method of inquiry for my thesis is to investigate the various experiences, including definite influences, which contributed to shaping Illich's attitudes towards society, technology, and formal education. Since all of these factors eventually contributed to his famous theory of deschooling, this paper attempts to describe how Illich developed intellectually from his younger days until he conceptualized his notion of a free education in the Centre International de Documentation. In addition, this study analyzes the reactions of the major critics and commentators who either criticized or supported Illich's theories. / The thesis concludes by presenting the reactions of the author to both Ivan Illich's theories and to the views of his major critics and commentators.

A reprise of rhetoric in the Gorgias : is Plato a master rhetorician?

Tucker, Jiri Arthur Augustine. January 1997 (has links)
This thesis offers Plato's readers a different approach to reading the Gorgias. Chief consideration is given to Plato's artistic plan as a rhetorician, rather than a strict moral philosopher. The display of his rhetorical genius works to support his arguments in favour of a certain kind of rhetoric. The usual argument that Plato is attacking rhetoric is rejected here. In its place the reader will see a Plato refuting his contemporaries' spurious form of rhetoric, as the rhetoric Plato represents and displays is a true craft, as genuine as the dialectic. Rhetoric is not without its shortcomings, but neither is the dialectic, and though Socrates says otherwise, it is because Plato is not Socrates. The argument for two Socrates is not advanced here, but his rhetorical tendencies are expressed in three debates whose overall message culminates in his prophetic myth of life after death. Plato introduces a new kind of visionary rhetoric that Socrates does not explicitly defend but which he nonetheless displays within the drama of the dialogue. Plato's views on rhetoric, then, are not merely the sum of Socrates' views on the Gorgias' theme, rather it is within the dramatic presentation of different views on rhetoric that Plato seeks to convey his defence of rhetoric.
