Some Properties of Dini Derivatives

Pinkerton, Jane W. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to derive certain of the fundamental properties of the Dini derivatives of an arbitrary real function. To this end it will be necessary to investigate the properties of the limits superior and inferior of real functions and to prove the Vitali Covering Theorem as well as a fundamental theorem on the metric density of arbitrary point sets.

Romanticism or Baroque? A Comparative Study of Approaches to the Ciaccona Attributed to Tomaso Antonio Vitali

Dang, Ha Viet 08 1900 (has links)
Like numerous other Baroque pieces, the Ciaccona attributed to Tomaso Antonio Vitali (1663-1745) was transformed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The German violinist and composer Ferdinand David (1810-1873) was the first to edit and publish the piece. The composition became popular after being included in the second volume of his Die Hohe Schule des Violinspiels [The Advanced Method of Violin Playing] (c.1867). Since then, Vitali Ciaccona became an essential work in the violin repertoire and is often heard in concert halls. However, what many audiences hear in concerts is essentially an arrangement of the Ciaccona. Acknowledging the "double life" of the piece as both Baroque and Romantic, this dissertation examines the advantages and disadvantages of playing the Ciaccona attributed to Vitali on both the Baroque and modern violins.

Some properties of solutions to weakly hypoelliptic equations

Bär, Christian January 2012 (has links)
A linear differential operator L is called weakly hypoelliptic if any local solution u of Lu = 0 is smooth. We allow for systems, i.e. the coefficients may be matrices, not necessarily of square size. This is a huge class of important operators which covers all elliptic, overdetermined elliptic, subelliptic and parabolic equations. We extend several classical theorems from complex analysis to solutions of any weakly hypoelliptic equation: the Montel theorem providing convergent subsequences, the Vitali theorem ensuring convergence of a given sequence, and Riemann's first removable singularity theorem. In the case of constant coefficients we show that Liouville's theorem holds, any bounded solution must be constant and any L^p solution must vanish.

The Boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood Maximal Function and the Strong Maximal Function on the Space BMO

Zhang, Wenhao 01 January 2018 (has links)
In this thesis, we present the space BMO, the one-parameter Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, and the two-parameter strong maximal function. We use the John-Nirenberg inequality, the relation between Muckenhoupt weights and BMO, and the Coifman-Rochberg proposition on constructing A1 weights with the Hardy- Littlewood maximal function to show the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function on BMO. The analogous statement for the strong maximal function is not yet understood. We begin our exploration of this problem by discussing an equivalence between the boundedness of the strong maximal function on rectangular BMO and the fact that the strong maximal function maps A∞ weights into the A1 class. We then extend a multiparameter counterexample to the Coifman-Rochberg proposition proposed by Soria (1987) and discuss the difficulties in modifying it into an A∞ counterexample that would disapprove the boundedness of the strong maximal function.

Pokrývací věty / Covering theorems

Jirůtková, Petra January 2013 (has links)

Charakterisierungen schwacher Kompaktheit in Dualräumen / Characterizations of weak compactness in dual spaces

Möller, Christian 15 September 2003 (has links)
In this thesis we present an extensive characterization of weak* sequentially precompact subsets of the dual of a sequentially order complete M-space with an order unit. This central part of the thesis generalizes results due to H.H. Schaefer and X.D. Zhang showing that small weak* compact subsets of the dual of a space of bounded measurable real-valued functions (continuous real-valued functions on a compact quasi-Stonian space) are weakly compact. Moreover, while the proofs of Schaefer and Zhang use measure theoretical arguments, the arguments presented here are purely elementary and are based on the well-known result, that the space l1 has the Schur property. Finally some applications are given. For example, we investigate compact or sequentially precompact subsets, which consist of order-weakly compact operators, in the space of continuous linear operators defined on a sequentially order complete Riesz space with values in a Banach space provided with the strong operator topology: as an immediate consequence of the results, we can easily deduce extended versions of the Vitali-Hahn-Saks theorem for vector measures. For this we need a generalization of the Yosida-Hewitt decomposition theorem, which is proved here with other techniques like the factorization of an order-weakly compact operator through a Banach lattice with order continuous norm.
