Gómez-Bofill, Walter 28 January 1999 (has links)
We consider two types of one-parametric problems: optimization problems and variational inequalities. Both are studied in relationship with the regularity approach due to Jongen, Jonker and Twilt (JJT-regularity), which was defined initially only for one-parametric optimization problems. The properties of two special embeddings are analysed under the assumption of JJT-regularity. Given an optimization problem P, the first embedding analysed is defined with use of an interior point of the feasible set. It holds for this embedding, that the parametric feasible set for tglobal approach. Statements concerning the existence of solution curves connecting problems (for instance t=0 and t=1) under the defined regularity are studied in the last section. The consideration of JJT-regularity for the case of variational inequalities is a new and usefull aspect for the study of this problem.

Holomorphic Vector Bundles on Ruled Surfaces and Their Blowing Ups

Matuschke, Andreas 05 June 1998 (has links)
This work is motivated by the general interest in moduli spaces of based SU(r)-instantons on the four dimensional sphere and on the connected sum of complex projective planes, which can be interpreted as moduli spaces of framed holomorphic vector bundles on blown up ruled surfaces. To be precise, we consider moduli of based SU(r)-instantons over all self-dual four dimensional manifolds, where the twistor fibration contains a surface of degree 1 which itself contains a twistor fibre. This applies for instance to the well-examined class of LeBrun-twistor spaces. We display the necessary background of this relationship. Inspired by Hurtubise's paper "Instantons and Jumping Lines", we study the local jumping behaviour of such framed vector bundles and introduce the concept of framed exceptional local jumps. We describe framed ordinary and exceptional jumps by monads and examine the geometric properties of their fine moduli spaces. Based on this examination and on the results of Boyer, Hurtubise, Mann, Milgram and Tian, where the Atiyah-Jones conjecture for based SU(r)-instantons on the four dimensional sphere is proved, we show homological and homotopical charge stability for all considered moduli of based SU(r)-instantons. Moreover, we present a smooth compactification of these moduli spaces.

Higher gap morasses

Cárdenas, Franqui 26 August 2005 (has links)
Velleman proved the consistency of the existence of simplified gap 2 morasses (equivalent to the concrete morasses defined by Jensen) using a two stage forcing. We give an essentially different proof of the same result and fill up some details from Velleman's paper which were not clear or imcomplete. In fact the proof uses a simpler definition of simplified gap 2 morasses. We have also eliminated the use of square-like sequences in the second stage, employing a ``guessing'' procedure for sequences which are not fixed and do not satisfy full coherence requirement. With these steps we hope to have laid the foundation for a future proof of gap n morasses in ZFC.

Railway scheduling problems and their decomposition

Strotmann, Christian 28 January 2008 (has links)
Railway scheduling problems are quite popular scheduling and optimization problems which are treated in a large variety of papers and projects. Many special and even quite general situations have been investigated theoretically and also a variety of applied approaches tested on real-world instances has been developed. This thesis mainly deals with the problem of scheduling trains in railway networks with respect to given routings, fixed minimal travelling times, and other constraints like time-windows. It combines the theory of some well-known scheduling models with its applications in railway scheduling. The railway scheduling problems considered in this work are closely related to job-shop scheduling problems with blocking and some additional constraints. Therefore part of this research is related to these shop scheduling problems. Theoretical scheduling models are extended, complexity results are derived and solution methods are proposed. Most results are applied to the considered railway scheduling problems. In addition to approaches which treat railway problems as a whole also decomposition methods for these problems and corresponding solution methods are presented. These solution methods are tested and compared with simple greedy procedures.

Cyclic Scheduling Problems

Kampmeyer, Thomas 13 July 2006 (has links)
For classical non-cyclic scheduling problems, we are given a set of operations, each of which has to be processed exactly once. The aim is to minimize or maximizea given objective function such as makespan or sum of all (weighted) completion times for a given set of constraints. The set of constraints is usually given by precedence constraints between the operations. In contrast to these problems, for cyclic scheduling problems we are given a set of operations, each of which has to be processed infinitely often. Such types of scheduling problems arise in different application areas like compiler design, manufacturing, digital signal processing, railway scheduling, timetabling, etc. The problem is to find a periodic schedule which minimizes a given objective function. There exist two objective functions which are important in this area of cyclic scheduling. The objective which is considered throughout this work is to minimize the time difference between two succeeding occurrences of one operation for a given set of constraints. This time difference is called cycle time. In this thesis, we develop a general framework to model and to describe cyclic scheduling problems with resource constraints. Furthermore, we extend the model to describe blocking constraints for cyclic scheduling problems. In order to solve the problem, we develop a local search approach.

Harvesting of Age Structured Fish Populations

Mohamed, Mostafa Kamel Saber 18 February 2005 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to define and study harvesting models of fish populations. These models are applied to particular fish species e.g., haddock and cod. The thesis is divided into five chapters: The first chapter is considered as an introductory one. In it, basics of fish biology and the recruitment process are defined. Two simple recruitment models known by the names Ricker and Beverton-Holt are used. In the second chapter the generalized Leslie model or Usher model is introduced. In section 2.2, some matrix theory is presented. For this matrix model, the net reproductive number is defined and studied in section 2.3. It turns out to be more useful than the spectral radius. In section 2.4, this study is extended to nonlinear matrix models. The nonlinearity, however, is defined only by the recruitment process. This allows to determine the equilibrium components. Finally section 2.5, the local stability of nonlinear matrix models is analyzed. Harvesting of such general matrix model is defined in chapter 3. We distinguish three different harvesting models (selective, net and semicontinuous harvesting models). In chapter 4, these harvesting models are then applied to concrete fish populations and analyzed with respect to its various parameters. In chapter 5, the stability is studied again along the lines of the paper of Levin, Goodyear [18]. The key results in this study are: 1) The maximum sustainable yields for selective harvesting and net harvesting are rather close. 2) Semicontinuous harvesting is more realistic harvesting models. 3) From a quantitative point of view, the choice of the recruitment function is important. 4) Harvesting process increases mortality and stability when we used Ricker recruitment model. 5) Stability of populations always holds if we use Beverton-Holt recruitment model.

Resultants: A Tool for Chow Varieties / Resultanten: Ein Werkzeug zum Umgang mit Chow Varietäten

Plümer, Judith 15 September 2000 (has links)
The Chow/Van der Waerden approach to algebraic cycles via resultants is elaborated and used to give a purely algebraic proof for the algebraicity of the complex suspension over arbitrary fields. The algebraicity of the join pairing on Chow varieties then follows over the complex numbers. The approach implies a more algebraic proof of Lawson´s complex suspension theorem in characteristic 0. The continuity of the action of the linear isometries operad on the group completion of the stable Chow variety is a consequence. Further Hoyt´s proof of the independence of the algebraic-continuous homeomorphism type of Chow varieties on embeddings is rectified and worked out over arbitrary fields.

Unimodular Covers and Triangulations of Lattice Polytopes

v.Thaden, Michael 17 June 2008 (has links)

A kinetic model for grain growth

Henseler, Reiner 21 September 2007 (has links)
The subject matter of this thesis is a detailed analysis of the self--consistent kinetic model for grain growth introduced by Fradkov. The model is based on the von Neumann--Mullins law describing the change of area of grains according to their topological class, i.e. the number of edges they have. Topological events are performed by coupling terms between equations for the number densities of different topological classes. The resulting system of transport equations is infinite-dimensional with a tridiagonal coupling structure. Self-consistency of this kinetic model is achieved by introducing a coupling''s weight making the equations nonlinear and nonlocal in space. We start with an introduction in the first chapter. Afterwards in the second chapter we derive Fradkov''s model and carry out formal calculations to illustrate self-consistency. In the third chapter we present a priori calculations mainly allowing us to bound the nonlinearity. This enables us to prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to finite-dimensional systems in the first part of the fourth chapter. Further bounds on the number densities established in the fifth chapter allow for passing to the limit concerning the number of equations in the second part of the fourth chapter. Therefore we prove existence of solutions to the infinite-dimensional system by a suitable approximation procedure. Uniqueness and continuous dependence on the data is then provided by energy methods. The sixth chapter focusses on long-time behaviour and mainly on stationary solutions of a rescaled system as candidates for self-similar solutions. Finally we prove Lewis'' law asymptotically.
