Preliminary Design of Tall Buildings

Techniques for preliminary analysis of various tall building systems subjected to lateral loads have been studied herein. Three computer programs written in Matlab® graphical user interface language for use on any personal computer are presented. Two of these programs incorporate interactive graphics. A program called Wall_Frame_2D is introduced for two-dimensional analysis of shear wall-frame interactive structures, using the shear-flexural cantilever analogy. The rigid outrigger approach was utilized to develop a program called Outrigger Program to analyze multi-outrigger braced tall buildings. In addition, a program called Frame Tube was developed which allows analysis of single and quad-bundled framed tube structures. The tube grids are replaced with an equivalent orthotropic plate, and the governing differential equations are solved in closed form. Results for lateral deflections, rotations, and moment, shear, and torque distributions within the various resisting elements are compared against other preliminary and "exact" matrix analysis methods for several examples. SAP2000 was used to obtain "exact" results. The approximate analyses are found to give reasonable results and a fairly good indication of the behavior of the actual structure. These programs are proposed for inclusion in a knowledge-based approach to preliminary tall building design. The tall building design process is outlined and criteria are given for the incorporation of these "Resource Level Knowledge Modules" into an integrated tall building design system.

A Numerical Study On Response Factors For Steel Wall-frame Systems

A numerical study has been undertaken to evaluate the response of dual systems which consist of steel plate shear walls and moment resisting frames. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the influence of elastic base shear distribution between the wall and the frame on the global system response. A total of 10 walls and 30 wall-frame systems, ranging from 3 to 15 stories, were selected for numerical assessment. These systems represent cases in which the elastic base shear resisted by the frame has a share of 10%, 25%, or 50% of the total base shear resisted by the dual system. The numerical study consisted of 1600 time history analyses employing three-dimensional finite elements. All 40 structures were separately analyzed for elastic and inelastic response by subjecting to the selected suite of earthquake records. Interstory drifts, top story drift, base shears resisted by the wall and the frame were collected during each analysis. Based on the analysis results, important response quantities such as the response modification, the overstrength, the displacement amplification and ductility reduction factors are evaluated herein. Results are presented in terms of several measures such as the interstory drift ratio and the top story drift ratio. A discussion related to the influence of load share on the response factors is given.

Lateral Load Analysis Of Shear Wall-frame Structures

The purpose of this study is to model and analyze the nonplanar shear wall assemblies of shear wall-frame structures. Two three dimensional models, for open and closed section shear wall assemblies, are developed. These models are based on conventional wide column analogy, in which a planar shear wall is replaced by an idealized frame structure consisting of a column and rigid beams located at floor levels. The rigid diaphragm floor assumption, which is widely used in the analysis of multistorey building structures, is also taken into consideration. The connections of the rigid beams are released against torsion in the model proposed for open section shear walls. For modelling closed section shear walls, in addition to this the torsional stiffness of the wide columns are adjusted by using a series of equations. Several shear wall-frame systems having different shapes of nonplanar shear wall assemblies are analyzed by static lateral load, response spectrum and time history methods where the proposed methods are used. The results of these analyses are compared with the results obtained by using common shear wall modelling techniques.

Muchas ciudades del Perú se encuentran ubicadas en el cinturón de fuego del Pacífico, en consecuencia, existe una mayor probabilidad de ocurrencias de sismos que generen cuantiosas pérdidas de vida y grandes perjuicios económicos. Debido a este problema, la ingeniería civil está en la obligación de investigar nuevos diseños sísmicos más precisos, los cuales originaron diversos métodos que usan a los desplazamientos de la estructura como parámetro principal, ya que a través de los desplazamientos se pueden obtener los momentos y cortantes de la estructura. A este método se le conoce como Diseño Basado en Desplazamientos. El autor que le dio los lineamientos teóricos más amplios y consistentes es Priestley, con su propuesta llamada Diseño Directo Basado en Desplazamientos. Por otro lado, en la realidad peruana, las edificaciones con sistema estructura del pórtico de acero son atípicos en comparación con las de sistema dual de concreto armado. En consecuencia, se desaprovecha las propiedades de este material y de este sistema estructural, el cual se sumerge más en el rango inelástico que el concreto. La tesis analizará los resultados obtenidos del análisis sísmico de una estructura de sistema dual y otra de pórticos de acero, ambas con una misma configuración arquitectónica, bajo las metodologías de Diseño Directo Basado en Desplazamientos y de Diseño Basado en Fuerzas. Esto generará la comparación entre los sistemas estructurales bajo las metodologías mencionadas. / Many cities in Peru are located in the Pacific ring of fire, consequently, there is a greater probability of earthquakes that generate large losses of life and great economic damage. Due to this problem, civil engineering is obliged to investigate new more accurate seismic designs, which originated several methods that use the displacements of the structure as the main parameter, since through the displacements the moments and shear of the structure can be obtained. This method is known as Displacement Based Design. The author who gave the broadest and most consistent theoretical guidelines is Priestley, with his proposal called Direct Displacement Based Design. On the other hand, in the Peruvian reality, steel frames buildings system are atypical compared to those of the dual wall-frame with reinforced concrete system. Consequently, the properties of this material and this structural system are wasted, which is more immersed in the inelastic range than concrete. The thesis will analyze the results obtained from the seismic analysis of a dual wall-frame building and another of steel frames, both with the same architectural configuration, under the Direct Displacement Based Design method and the Design Based Force method, which is the method used in most standards. The thesis will generate the comparison between the structural systems under the mentioned methodologies. / Tesis
