An Urban Centre for temporary workers in Hatfield, Pretoria

Van der Westhuizen, Andries L 21 November 2003 (has links)
This thesis elaborates on the relationship between work and time and how it relates to quality architecture. Quality is a degree of excellence. The project proposed is aimed at promoting quality in the built environment through workmanship. Pretoria, in the Tswane Metropolitan area, is in Gauteng, the province responsible for most trade in South Africa. Hatfield in Pretoria is home to many students of various institutions, including the University of Pretoria. Many workers live in Pretoria and commutes daily between Pretoria and Johannesburg. The world is characterized by ever-changing aspects today, and especially in South Africa uncertainty prevails. Fluctuations in the economy have resulted in a feeling of insecurity. An unemployment rate of approximately 40% has caused many South Africans to become temporary, and often migrant, workers. This uncertainty also reflects in the built environment, where buildings have become "temporary", displaying a lack of workmanship in the planning and construction. The project discussed in this thesis is a result of intensive planning on the site, in collaboration with the proposed Hatfield Gautrans Station by Bernard Roccon (thesis proposal for MArch(Prof) degree, 2003), implemented to provide an efficient public transport link between Pretoria and Johannesburg. The functions of the project; a stable centre acting as a datum point and haven for temporary workers, is a result of this planning process. This thesis aims at re-establishing a trust in the built environment through quality architecture, by promoting work and workmanship. / Dissertation (MArch (Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Architecture / unrestricted

Extending dimensional modeling through the abstraction of data relationships and development of the semantic data warehouse

Hart, Robert 04 December 2017 (has links)
The Kimball methodology, often referred to as dimensional modelling, is well established in data warehousing and business intelligence as a highly successful means for turning data into information. Yet weaknesses exist in the Kimball approach that make it difficult to rapidly extend or interrelate dimensional models in complex business areas such as Health Care. This Thesis looks at the development of a methodology that will provide for the rapid extension and interrelation of Kimball dimensional models. This is achieved through the use of techniques similar to those employed in the semantic web. These techniques allow for rapid analysis and insight into highly variable data which previously was difficult to achieve. / Graduate

Dátová architektúra a dátové sklady v bankovníctve / Data architecture and data marts in banks

Juhás, Michal January 2008 (has links)
In this diploma thesis I analyze data architecture and data marts in a bank area. Firstly I analyze different theoretical approaches to build the data warehouse. Consequently I specialize in operational and analytical data marts -- I analyze their business value, differences and location at the warehouse. In the third chapter I analyze reasons that have led to implement Asset Liability Management data mart. In the following chapter I analyze a life-cycle of this data mart not only from the technical point of view, but also from the project management perspective. The main benefit from this thesis is in the analysis of these aspects of ALM life cycle.

Architektura datových skladů v bankovnictví / Architecture of banking data warehouse

Bureš, Petr January 2009 (has links)
The thesis deals with banking data warehouse and the factors which influence their architecture. The goal of the thesis is to analyze the influence by fulfilling the three partial goals -- defining banks' requirements on data warehouses, analyzing a data warehouse in the real banking environment and making a comparison of the Czech banks' data warehouses. First, the thesis briefly introduces elements of business intelligence (BI) and data warehousing. Second, after deducing reasons for BI implementation in commercial banks, the requirements on data warehouse are synthesized and their impacts on the data warehouse architecture are analyzed. Finally, conclusions of the thesis are applied on creation of the survey which enables comparison of the Czech banks' data warehouses. The thesis applies the theory of relationship between BI maturity, requirements on BI and data warehouse architecture and creates a tool for evaluating and comparing the data warehouses of banks with respect to bank's BI maturity and predisposition for a particular architecture. The tool can serve as a basis for a general tool able to compare data warehouses in other branches of economy and can help to better understand relations between organizations' need for information, BI solutions used and underlying data warehouses.

Analýza platformy SAP BI a porovnání vybraných nástrojů s řešením MS SQL Server BI / SAP BI Platform Analysis and Comparison with Chosen Tools of MS SQL Server BI Solution

Řezníček, Jiří January 2008 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with an analysis of SAP Business Intelligence platform (SAP NetWeaver BI 7.0) and compares its chosen tools with Microsoft SQL Server BI. The main aim of the thesis is to evaluate SAP BI system in a comprehensive way whereas extra attention is paid to certain areas, such as a data warehouse. One of the goals is the comparison of approaches and methods of the creation of the data warehouse with MS SQL Server BI solution. The thesis consists of theoretical insight into Business Intelligence, which is focused on the architecture of data warehouse, and OLAP technologies. There is an evaluation of the role of SAP in the BI market followed by the introduction of SAP NetWeaver, an application and integration platform. Included is also an analysis of the architecture of data warehouse, methods of storing data, ETL process and other chosen functions and tools (including presentation tools) in next sections. A sample application in the final part provides the reader with better understanding of different ETL approaches, which are analyzed into detail and evaluated. There is the comparison of OLAP technologies in the end and the comparison of basic reporting tools, as well.

Datové sklady ve finančním sektoru / How to implement data warehouse in banks and insurance companies

Matějka, Martin January 2008 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with data warehouse applications in banking and insurance sector. The aim is to define this sphere, describe it and create a set of reccomendations and methodology connected with the best ways of implementation in financial institutions. Because of the wide range of this topic it can not be taken globally. I focused primarily on interesting or problematic areas. The result is a material which is devoted to technical and logical implementation and its ways. Then the importance of a data warehouse and its function in a financial institution are also presented to the readers. One part of my bachelor work deals with the historical development of data warehouses' solutions in this market segment. During the writing I wanted to utilize several years of my experience in this area and that is why this work results mainly from practical knowledge and it is also focused on real implementation.

Fungování distribučního centra s dámským oblečením ve Velké Británii dnes a po případné automatizaci skladových procesů / The functioning of the distribution centre processing clothes in Great Britain today and after the possible automation of warehouse processes

Kúdelová, Lucie January 2009 (has links)
The goal of this diploma is understanding and evaluation of the warehouse processes, the specification of problems and finding the best ways to deal with these drawbacks. The method used for the diploma is comparison. The theoretical part briefly focuses on the fashion logistics. The practical part then describes the distribution centre of the company Bonmarché Ltd. At first the functioning processes in all warehouse departments are specified and the problems are appointed. The second part focuses on the considered changes that would eliminate the problems. The final comparison will tell us whether these changes will solve the problems and enable the company to stay competitive on the British clothing market.
