Water erosion on soil slopes and a suggested method for assessing susceptibility of mine tailings to water erosion

Muasi, Vhonani Shadrack 14 November 2006 (has links)
Student Number : 0418755N - MSc (Eng) dissertation - School of Civil and Environmental Engineering - Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment / Environmental impacts from tailings impoundments differ according to their mineral constituents. Erosion is one of the processes that aggravate the environmental impacts from tailings due to the transportation of particles, and knowing the susceptibility mechanisms of those tailings particles for erosion will provide understanding of how to prevent impacts arising from erosion. Laboratory pinhole erosion tests were used to determine the susceptibility of tailings particles to erosion. Compacted tailings samples were used, as compaction is an important parameter of erosion susceptibility. The study entails investigation of factors that affect erosion from the slopes of tailings deposits in order to evaluate mitigation measures. The results could help to provide more effective methods to reduce gully formation and enhance environmental protection. It is advisable to prevent environmental impacts at the source, before they become detrimental and costly to mitigate.

Avaliação da variabilidade espacial do fallout do \'ANTPOT.7Be\' / Evaluation of \'ANTPOT.7Be\' fallout spatial variability

Pinto, Victor Meriguetti 19 September 2011 (has links)
The cosmogenic radionuclide beryllium-7 (\'ANTPOT.7Be\') is produced in the atmosphere by cosmic particle reactions and is being used as a tracer for soil erosion and climatic processes research. After the production, \'ANTPOT.7Be\' bonds to aerosol particles in the atmosphere and is deposited on the soil surface with other radionuclide species by rainfall. Because of the high adsorption on soil particles and its short half-life of 53.2 days, this radionuclide follows of the erosion process and can be used as a tracer to evaluate the sediment transport that occurs during a single rain event or short period of rain events. A key assumption for the erosion evaluation through this radiotracer is the uniformity of the spatial distribution of the \'ANTPOT.7Be\' fallout. The \'ANTPOT.7Be\' method was elaborated recently and due to its few applications, some assumptions related to the method were not yet properly investigated yet, and the hypothesis of \'ANTPOT.7Be\' fallout uniformity needs to be evaluated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the \'ANTPOT.7Be\' fallout spatial distribution through the rain water \'ANTPOT.7Be\' activity analysis of the first five millimeters of single rain events. The rain water was sampled using twelve collectors distributed on an experimental area of about 300 m², located in the campus of São Paulo University, Piracicaba. The \'ANTPOT.7Be\' activities were measured using a 53% efficiency gamma-ray spectrometer from the Radioisotope laboratory of CENA. The \'ANTPOT.7Be\' activities in rain water varied from 0.26 to 1.81 Bq.L-1, with the highest values in summer and lowest in spring. In each one of the 5 single events, the spatial variability of \'ANTPOT.7Be\' activity in rain water was high, showing the high randomness of the fallout spatial distribution. A simulation using the \'ANTPOT.7Be\' spatial variability values obtained here and \'ANTPOT.7Be\' average reference inventories taken from the literature was performed determining the lowest detectable erosion rate estimated by \'ANTPOT.7Be\' model. The importance of taking a representative number of samples to determine the average reference \'ANTPOT.7Be\' inventory was verified, which is essential to improve the precision of the soil redistribution rate estimates

Změny erozního ohrožení a intenzita vodní eroze půdy v povodí Odlezelského jezera / Changes of erosion risk and water soil erosion intensity in the Odlezelské Lake catchment

Pagáč, Petr January 2019 (has links)
Water erosion in the Czech Republic is the largest phenomenon that degrades and seriously damages agricultural areas throughout the country. It is influenced by many factors that have changed since the 1950s. Various methods are used to assess the intensity of erosion. In the Czech Republic, the USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) is the most widely used equation, which is the cornerstone of the model used in this work. I quantified and localized water erosion in the Odlezel lake basin for individual scenarios of land use change using the WaTEM / SEDEM model. The results show the seriousness of water erosion in relation to landscape management, as the modeled intensity of erosion in 2018 is almost the same as in the period of collectivization. The results of modeling are confronted with changes of individual input factors, with measured data of river sediment export in the Mladotický brook and up to date knowledge about clogging of the lake basin. Key words: water erosion, modeling erosion, WaTEM/SEDEM

Modeling Soil Loss to Determine Water Erosion Risk at Camp Williams National Guard Base, Utah

Bartsch, Kevin P. 01 May 1998 (has links)
Soil erosion was assessed at Camp Williams National Guard Base by creating an erosion risk classification map and comparing the erosion impact of disturbance regimes on different hillslopes. Soil erosion does not appear to be a problem for most of Camp Williams. The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation was applied using GIS to create a soil erosion risk map for the entire Camp Williams facility. The map indicated where problem areas occurred and showed relative erosion risk, but its lack of quantitative accuracy should be noted. Areas of concern included landscapes with little or no protective vegetation such as roads, abandoned agricultural fields, and sensitive riparian areas where gullies tend to form and expand. The Water Erosion Prediction Project model was used to evaluate the erosion impacts of various disturbances on five study hillslopes. The model did not appear to function well on the Camp Williams study hillslopes because the distribution of infiltration rates could not be satisfactorily represented. However, hydraulic conductivity measurements collected for this task were useful in providing insight into some of the physical processes of erosion. The hydraulic conductivity measurements showed some of the impacts of military activities, grazing, and wildfire on soil properties. Erosion bridges were also used on the five study hillslopes in an attempt to measure soil Joss and deposition. However, the bridges Jacked the capability of measuring the low rates of erosion during the time period set for this experiment. The bridges showed potential for measuring erosion in rills, gullies, highly disturbed areas, or in longer duration experiments.

Use of the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) Model to Predict Road Surface Erosion in Mountain Rangeland Areas

Zalewsky, Brian J. 01 May 1998 (has links)
A significant source of sediment in many watersheds is that associated with the layout, construction, and maintenance of roadways. Much work has been done in more mesic forested environments with little or none in semiarid systems. Acc urate estimation of runoff and sediment yield from native surfaced roads located in semiarid mountainous ecosystems is important to both private and public regulatory agencies. The Watershed Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model represents the most current erosion prediction technology. WEPP has been applied to the problems of logging road erosion in more mesic forests but has not been tested or evaluated on roadways located in semiarid mountainous ecosystems. Six rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to measure runoff and sediment yield off three separate plots located on Tickville Road, located on Camp W.G. Williams, a National Guard Training Center in Utah . These data were compared with runoff and erosion estimates produced by the WEPP model. WEPP cropland and rangeland erodibility equations were used to predict rill erodibility (Kr), interrill erodibility (Ki), and critical shear (TAUc). These were tested for their effectiveness in predicting road erodibilities in these environments. A sensitivity analysis was performed on those parameters that were suspected of having a substantial impact on model output and accuracy. There was an excellent correlation between predicted and observed total runoff volumes for all simulations (R2= 0.96). The differences were greater than 10% only for plot 2 wet; otherwise, the average difference for all six simulations was 4.9%. When using Kr, K.i , and TAUc as predicted by rangeland methods, predicted sediment yields differed from those measured, on average, by 82%. Predicted sediment yields differed by only 22% compared to calculated sediment yields, when using the cropland erodibility equations to predict Kr, K.i , and TAUc. A sensitivity analysis showed that percent slope, slope length, days since last tillage, and ridge roughness all had a significant impact on WEPP predicted sediment yields. Results show the effectiveness of the WEPP model in predicting runoff and erosion off native surfaced roads in these semiarid mountainous regions.
