The Relationship between Ethnic Identity and Psychological Health: A Meta-Analytic Review

Grant, Julie Hewatt 30 September 2008 (has links)
Ethnic identity, or one's feelings of belongingness and affirmation with one's ethnic group, has been postulated to be related to one's psychological health. Specifically, it is thought that stronger ethnic identity is related to better psychological health. In order to fully investigate this relationship, a meta-analytic review and analysis was conducted utilizing all previous research on the relationship between ethnic identity and psychological health. This study sought to examine this relationship in more detail by dividing psychological health into two areas: 1) psychological functioning, and 2) psychological dysfunction. Both of these categories were examined and analyzed separately utilizing a random effects model. Results indicated a significant relationship between ethnic identity and psychological health. Additionally, ethnic identity was shown to be significantly and inversely related to psychological dysfunction. Several moderators (age, gender, publication status, type of ethnic identity measure, ethnic group membership) were tested for their respective effects on these relationships. For ethnic identity and psychological health, several variables moderated this relationship, including publication status, ethnic identity measure, and ethnic group membership. For ethnic identity and psychological dysfunction, the following variables moderated the relationship: age, gender, ethnic identity measure, and ethnic group membership. Limitations, implications, and future directions are discussed.

Enhancing the effectiveness of counting blessings on subjective well-being : the effects of autonomy support and implementation intention

Mak, Suk-har, 麥淑霞 January 2012 (has links)
The study investigated whether providing autonomy support and implementation intention would enhance participants’ subjective well-being in a counting blessings intervention. One hundred and one senior secondary school students were randomly assigned into four conditions: (1) with both autonomy support and implementation intention; (2) with autonomy support only; (3) with implementation intention only; and (4) without autonomy support and implementation intention (control). They were then instructed to count three blessings daily for two weeks. The results indicated that participants’ positive affect was significantly enhanced by counting blessings intervention with autonomy support; while their life satisfaction and positive affect were significantly promoted by the intervention supplemented with implementation intentions. Implications of the findings were discussed. / published_or_final_version / Educational Psychology / Master / Master of Social Sciences

WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF IMMIGRATION ON THE CHANGES OF SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING FOR NATIVE-BORN CANADIANS?

Ding, Wen Hao 04 December 2013 (has links)
This paper investigates how the immigration ratio affects the subjective well-being of native-born Canadians. I use microdata from the Canadian Community Health Survey during the period 2009 to 2010 and employ ordered probit and OLS models to examine this question. The results show that the geographic concentration of immigrants in Canada has a negative effect on native-born Canadians’ subjective well-being. Specifically, an increase of one standard deviation in the immigrant share in each health region is estimated to decrease life satisfaction by 1.28 standard deviation unit for natives. In addition, the effect of the immigration ratio on the life satisfaction of immigrants is significantly negative as well. Results indicate that the current immigrant selection policy in Canada does not benefit both natives and immigrants in the context of subjective well-being. / the effect of immigration on the life satisfaction of native-born Canadians.

The Space Between Us: An Inquiry Into Belonging

Lyster, Kim Pamela Boutwell 17 April 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the topic of belonging: both the sense and experience of it as well as the relationship to individual and collective well-being. Through in-depth interviews with five leaders and advocates in the social justice community, I explore their perspectives on the topic, significant influences, the power of the experience, and the relationship between inclusion and belonging. Further, the capacity for belonging to influence and impact social issues such as marginalization, discrimination, and poverty are explored. Methods for fostering belonging are also considered with a view to suggesting recommendations for promoting a lens of belonging as a means for renewing a commitment to the beloved community. / Graduate

Löpträning och välbefinnande

Nekby, Amanda January 2014 (has links)
