Processamento de hidroxiapatita bovina associada com prototipagem rápida visando implantes ósseos / Hydroxyapatite processing associated with rapid prototyping aiming bone implants

Camila Roberta de Meira 27 November 2014 (has links)
The study deals with the direct manufacturing of hydroxyapatite implants using rapid prototyping. Hydroxyapatite structure originated from bovine mineral bone has great importance among the biomaterials and biocompatibility due to its great similarity with the human bone structure. Rapid prototyping allows obtaining models with dimensions and shaping mimetics to the patient\'s bone defect and enables the achievement of implants with complex geometry and porosity desired. This study aims to obtain scaffolds for three rapid prototyping techniques: the green machining, 3DPrint and an innovative rapid prototyping technique, obtained by polymerization of acrylic resin (liquid phase of slurry) by ultraviolet light present in a range of the spectrum band a blue light emitted by the laser (SLB). The small conformation pressure, typical of additive rapid prototyping techniques requires highly reactive powders for effective sintering, and then hydroxyapatite obtained from bovine femur was calcined and milled in ball mill and vibratory mill for obtention of sub micrometrics powders. The green machining was considered as the standard of mechanical properties and was used to obtain cylindrical specimens, previously shaped by isostatic pressing at 100 and 200 MPa, and tested by densification, bending, hardness and toughness fracture. Introduction of particles of alumina and alumina whiskers were tested in search engine optimization of the mechanical properties. For rapid prototyping by the method of SLB, mixtures of hydroxyapatite and resin were subjected to blue laser emission directed in CNC equipment where three-dimensional pieces were prototyped and sintered. Hydroxyapatite derived from bovine bone showed characteristics of substitutional carbonate ions and non-stoichiometry, after grinding in a ball mill followed by vibratory mill, particles obtained was equivalent average diameter of 0.35 micrometers that proved reactive to promote sintering. Sintering at 1300 °C-2h gave the best crystallographic characteristics and mechanical properties, resulting in references bodies with hydroxyapatite without decomposition of other calcium phosphates with 99.8 % of density, flexural strength of 100 MPa, hardness of 483 HV and fracture toughness of 0.6 MPa.m1/2. The introduction of 1 vol% alumina and alumina whiskers increased the mechanical strength of the body with approximately 140 MPa and toughness fracture of 0.61 MPa.m1/2. For technical 3DPrint spherical agglomerates of ceramic composition should have dimensions between 200 and 400 mesh (75-38 µm) and the binder should have resistivity higher than 290 kΩ and components reactive, emollients, lubricants and stabilizers. In the manufacturing technique SLB incidence of the laser with a fluency of 170 mW.s/mm2 promoted curing of the resin of 0.5 mm in diameter and depth about 0.5 mm, which enabled the prototyping of scaffolds with thick layers 0.5 mm resistant to handle for removal of slurry uncured.

Renforcement d'un poly(oxyéthylène) par dispersion de whiskers de cellulose en voie fondue : contraintes et alternatives / Strengthening of a poly(ethylene oxide) by a dispersion of cellulose whiskers in the molten state : threats and alternatives

Gassiot-Talabot, Alix 03 December 2015 (has links)
Les doubles liaisons permettent une réticulation assurant la tenue mécanique du film / The aim of this study is to produce high-performance battery separators through extrusion. These solid polymer electrolytes should be permeable to ionic current but electrically insulating, all the while maintaining sufficient mechanical resistance. To this end, the dispersion of nanometrics fillers (cellulose whiskers) in a polymer is studied. Cellulose whiskers are crystalline sticks, with a length between 100 and 300 nm and a diameter between 5 and 20 nm. It is well known that a homogeneous dispersion of these fillers allows a percolating network, improving the mechanical reinforcement of the matrix at low concentrations. The goal is to carry out this dispersion in molten polymer through extrusion, as opposed to the well-established solvent evaporation process. The main difficulties are the aggregation of cellulose whiskers which occurs through hydrogen bonding and the concentrated medium in which these fillers are dispersed. The first part of the study is to determine the optimum process to prepare cellulose whiskers in order to limit aggregation and thus obtain a stable aqueous suspension. This stable system is necessary to obtain a percolating network in the polymer matrix through solvent evaporation. Once the protocol optimised, the second part of the study focuses on the dispersion of these whiskers in the molten matrix using both the internal mixer and the extruder. Blends and films are characterized by dynamical rheology analysis, thermal analysis and mechanical analysis: a degradation of the matrix and an orientation of the whiskers are observed. To by-pass these issues, several alternatives are used. The first one involves the adsorption of a copolymer on the whiskers. This method increases the hydrodynamic effect; however no percolation network is obtained. The second alternative is to use a low molar mass polymer. This leads to a decreased polymer viscosity which limits the orientation of the fillers, allowing the percolating network to form and prevents polymer degradation. The third way uses a copolymer with a low mass molar, synthesized from a monomer which carries double bonds. The low molar mass allows the decrease of the separator crystallinity thus improving the ionic performances at low temperatures. The double bonds can crosslink under UV light, which enhances the mechanical strength of the film

GABAᴀ Receptors in Rat Whisker Barrel Cortex: Effects of Sensory Deprivation

Salazar, Eduardo, 1962- 08 1900 (has links)
The GABAergic system in adult sensory cortex is affected by sensory deprivation, but little is known about how this predominant inhibitory system is affected during ontogeny. The present study investigates developmental effects of whisker trimming on GABAa receptors in rat barrel cortex. Rats trimmed for 6 wk beginning at birth and adulthood showed similar decreases in [3H]muscimol binding in deprived relative to non-deprived barrels, suggesting absence of a critical period.

The electrodeposition of tin coatings from deep eutectic solvents and their subsequent whisker growth

Stuttle, Christopher January 2014 (has links)
Tin electrodeposits produced from aqueous electrolytes are frequently used within the electronics industry due to their high solderability and corrosion protection. One limitation to using these deposits is their spontaneous formation of long conductive filament whiskers. These whiskers grow post-electrodeposition and increase the risk of unwanted electrical shorts within electronic devices. In this thesis, tin electrodeposits produced from a proprietary bright acid Tinmac electrolyte, currently used in industry, were studied. Electrodeposits were produced using a range of current densities with and without agitation and were characterised with respect to crystallographic orientation, topography and surface finish. Moreover, the intermetallic compound (IMC) growth produced at the copper substrate-tin coating interface was assessed over a period of time as its growth is considered to be a significant driving force behind whisker formation. In addition, a technique for the electrochemical anodic oxidation of tin electrodeposits on copper substrates was developed. This technique was used throughout this project for the study of IMC growth from tin electrodeposits as it was able to effectively remove the tin whilst leaving the IMCs and substrate unaffected. Ionic liquids exhibit promising electrochemical characteristics for electrodeposition but are still not widely utilised in industry. Their ability to deposit tin coatings has been studied in the present investigation. Trials concentrated on process optimisation to produce uniform electrodeposits by varying current density, SnCl2.2H2O concentration, and electrolyte composition. These deposits were then characterised and compared to tin coatings of similar thickness produced from Tinmac with respect to topography, surface finish, crystallographic orientation, IMC growth, and whisker propensity. Electrodeposits produced from the ionic liquid electrolyte exhibited a different crystallographic texture, topography, and IMC growth compared to those produced from Tinmac. Moreover, the deposit produced from the ionic liquid featured increased whisker growth compared to those produced from Tinmac, but in a wider context, far less growth than conventional tin electrodeposits in the literature. In addition, by exploiting other electrochemical characteristics of ionic liquids, such as their large potential window, future work may be able to produce novel tin or tin alloy electrodeposits which may further reduce the whisker propensity of deposits produced in this investigation.

TISSUE ENGINEERING COMPOSITE BIOMIMETIC GELATIN SPONGES FOR BONE REGENERATION

Rodriguez, Isaac 03 May 2013 (has links)
The field of tissue engineering aims to develop viable substitutes with the ability to repair and regenerate the functions of damaged tissue. Common practices to supplement bone regeneration in larger defects include bone graft biomaterials such as autografts, allografts, xenografts, and synthetic biomaterials. Autologous bone grafting is the current gold-standard procedure used to replace missing or damaged bone. However, these grafts have disadvantages such as donor site morbidity, limited availability, and the need for a secondary surgery. The focus of this study is to tissue engineer a lyophilized gelatin composite sponge composed of hydroxyapatite (HA), chitin whiskers (CW), and preparations rich in growth factors (PRGF) to provide sufficient structural support to the defect site while enhancing the body’s own reparative capacity, ultimately eliminating the need for autologous tissue harvesting or repeat operations. The present study investigates several in vitro evaluations on multiple compositions of modified gelatin sponge scaffolds for use in bone graft applications. Gelatin sponges were fabricated via freeze-drying, enhanced with PRGF, HA, and/or CW, and cross-linked with 50 mM 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) either during or post gelation. Initial evaluation of all scaffold combinations indicated that scaffolds released contents up to 90 days, EDC cross-linking during gelation allowed for more protein release, and had the ability to swell. Since the incorporation of PRGF, HA, and CW increased cell infiltration, and production of cell-created mineral matrix over 90 days in culture, these scaffolds were further characterized. Freeze-dried gelatin sponges enhanced with PRGF, HA, and CW and cross-linked during gelation with EDC (PHCE) were mineralized (M) in 5x revised simulated body fluid (r-SBF) for 1 hour to create a bone-like mineral surface. Gelatin EDC scaffold controls (GE), GE-M, PHCE, and PHCE-M scaffolds were characterized for their ability to swell, mineralizing potential, surface morphology, growth factor incorporation and release, uniaxial compression properties, and cell attachment, proliferation, infiltration, and protein/cytokine secretion.. After mineralization, scanning electron microscopy showed sparse clusters of mineral deposition for GE-M scaffolds while PHCE-M scaffolds exhibited a more uniform mineral deposition. Both GE and PHCE scaffolds were porous structures that swelled up to 50% of their original volume upon hydration. Over 21 days incubation, PHCE-M scaffolds cumulatively released about 30% of their original protein content, significantly more than all other scaffolds. Multiplex Luminex assays confirmed the successful incorporation of PRGF growth factors within PRGF sponges. For acellular uniaxial compression testing, PHCE-M scaffolds reported lower Young’s modulus values (1.3 - 1.6 MPa) when compared to GE and GE-M scaffolds (1.6 – 3.2 MPa). These low modulus values were comparable to values of tissue found in early stages of bone healing. DAPI (4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) staining and imaging showed an increase in initial cell attachment and infiltration of PHCE and PHCE-M scaffolds on day 1. GE-M scaffolds also appeared to attach more cells than the GE control. MTS cell proliferation assay results indicated that on days 4 and 7, PHCE scaffolds increased cell proliferation (compared to GE controls). MTS also illustrated that the addition of a mineral coating increases and decreases cell proliferation on GE-M and PHCE-M scaffolds, respectively. Multiplexer analysis of MG-63 protein/cytokine secretion suggests that cells are responding in a bone regenerative fashion on all scaffolds, as evidence of osteocalcin secretion. Little to no secretion of osteopontin, IL-1β, and TNF-α demonstrates that scaffolds are not influencing cells to secrete factors associated with bone resorption. The compressive mechanical properties of cellularized scaffolds did not differ much from acellular scaffolds. The collective results indicated increased cellular attachment, infiltration, and bone regenerative protein/cytokine secretion by cells on GE-M scaffolds, which support the addition of a bone-like mineral surface on GE scaffolds. Cellularized PHCE and PHCE-M scaffolds report similar advantages as well as Young’s modulus values in the range of native tissues present in the early stages of bone healing. The results of this study propose that the developed PHCE and PHCE-M scaffolds exhibit good cellular responses and mechanical properties for use in early bone healing applications.

Elazzouzi, Samira 21 April 2006 (has links) (PDF)

Implementation of Lead-Free Soldering in Highly Reliable Applications

Berglund, Ove January 2007 (has links)

The directive of the European parliament and of the council on the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) took effect in the European Union on July 1, 2006. Japan, California, China and Korea are all closed markets for exporters of components containing lead from July 1, 2007. Taiwan and Australia are working with similar directives. The RoHS directive is the reason why this thesis about the implementation of lead-free soldering in highly reliable applications is necessary.

The European Lead Free soldering NETwork (ELFNET) status survey from 2005 shows that the majority of the companies are well informed, but 20% are still not active in lead-free soldering. The Swedish industry is for the most part prepared and 95% of the components are lead-free. The transition to lead-free soldering will have a major affect on logistics and administration, because the RoHS directive is 90% about administration and logistics problems. Only 10% is technical problems.

The higher melting point in lead-free soldering affects every stage of the lead-free manufacturing, from assembly to testing and repair.

The major concern for highly reliable applications are that there are not enough data to understand to what grade lead-free solders will perform differently from lead based solders. Five different types of reliability testing were studied in this thesis; vibration, mechanical shock, thermal shock, thermal cycling and combined environments. Whiskers, voids, brittle fractures and mixed assembly problems were also studied. Individual tests alone should not be used to make definite decisions on lead-free soldering reliability. The lower reliability for lead-free solders in some tests does not necessarily mean that lead-free solders not can be used in highly reliable applications like defence electronics.

The most important conclusions from this thesis are:

• Update or change the logistic system and mark/label according to available standards.

• Secure a good board layout.

• Secure a good process control.

• Alternative surface board should be used. Tin-silver-copper (SAC) is the most reliable solder and Electroless Nickel/Immersion Gold (ENIG) is the most reliable surface finish.

• Remember that the higher temperature affects every stage of the manufacturing.

• No increased problems with whiskers or risk of high voiding levels.

• Mixed assembly is a risk.
