Endlich frei?

Johne, Alexandra 12 March 2014 (has links)
This thesis focuses on an analysis of the representation of the German Democratic Re-public (GDR) in two literary works by Thomas Brussig. The year between the summer of 1989 and the fall of 1990 was very eventful in Germany’s history. This time is called ‘Wende’, which finally ended with the reunification of the GDR and the German Fed-eral Republic. Since then, there has been a broad literary discourse about the ‘Wende’, which focuses on the time of the GDR itself, as well as its consequences afterwards. One of the authors involved in this debate is Thomas Brussig. This thesis will examine his two novels Helden wie wir (1995) and Wie es leuchtet (2004), which are both con-sidered to be part of the literary ‘Wende-dicourse’. Helden Wie Wir is regarded as one of the most important works within this genre. In this novel we find an accurate repre-sentation of the time and circumstances of the GDR, which ends with the fall of the Berlin Wall as the plot’s climax. Wie Es Leuchtet begins shortly before this event and describes the ‘German Year’ until the reunification. Therefore, both novels take place during the time of the GDR, represent how the ‘Wende’ developed, and bring the consequences it had for the country and its people in to consideration. The selection of these two stories is based upon the possibility that they allow to analyse different stations of the process of the ’Wende’. The main aspect which binds the novels together is the idea of ‘freedom’. The thesis will analyse the social structures of the time and answer the question of whether or not the ‘Wende’ is constructed as the protagonist’s liberation from a limited ‘power’. In order to achieve this, the thesis will utilize Foucault’s concepts of power and dis-course-relations. Since Foucault does not (against tradition) consider ‘power’ as some-thing that is completely possessed by the apparatus of the state, his ideas are helpful to analyse the distribution of power during the constructed time of the GDR, the “Wende”, and afterwards in literary works. Additionally, Foucault’s concept of resistance will help to analyse why the revolution, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the end of the GDR came in to existence. Furthermore, this thesis focuses on discourses about sexuality, body and gender by means of Foucault’s ideas as well as Judith Butler’s concept of performativity in order to discuss difficulties in society. The theory the thesis follows is that all of the novel’s constructed forms of society, especially those during and after the ‘Wende’, are societies that ‘need to be’ normalised, and are therefore a border itself for the people to free themselves from. In the first chapter the essay describes the genre “Wendeliteratur”. Afterwards, it elabo-rates on the most important points of Michel Foucault’s and Judith Butler’s theoretical concepts. At last, it gives an analysis of Brussig’s two novels with help of these con-cepts. The examination of Helden wie wir mainly shows that it is the hierarchical society during the GDR and afterwards that sets borders on societal freedom, since there is a distribution of power throughout the whole of society in both cases. The examination of Wie es leuchtet shows even clearer that the collapse of the GDR does not simultaneously mean absolute freedom for society.

A teachable semi-automatic web information extraction system based on evolved regular expression patterns

Siau, Nor Zainah January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores Web Information Extraction (WIE) and how it has been used in decision making and to support businesses in their daily operations. The research focuses on a WIE system based on Genetic Programming (GP) with an extensible model to enhance the automatic extractor. This uses a human as a teacher to identify and extract relevant information from the semi-structured HTML webpages. Regular expressions, which have been chosen as the pattern matching tool, are automatically generated based on the training data to provide an improved grammar and lexicon. This particularly benefits the GP system which may need to extend its lexicon in the presence of new tokens in the web pages. These tokens allow the GP method to produce new extraction patterns for new requirements.

Deconstructing Webern's Op 25, Drei Lieder: a Multidimensional Assessment

Morgeson, Paul Taylor 08 1900 (has links)
Webern scholarship has not comprehensively examined op. 25, drei lieder. If the selection of text for op. 25 is viewed as one work in three movements they create a ternary form (A-B-A1). To show how this form is developed in the music the author creates a new analytical system based on Schoenberg's Grundgestalt which is defined by three basic ideas: symmetry, liquidation, and variation. The relationship between the voice and accompaniment and Webern's deliberate manipulation of the text is used to reveal the use of a program which is then tied to the numerical symbolism of 2 and 3.

Psychology, culture and female texts : Brigitte Schwaiger's Wie kommt das Salz ins Meer

Busic, Julienne Eden 01 January 1991 (has links)
In recent years, there has been extensive debate in the area of literary criticism, much of it focused on real or imagined differences between male and female texts. French feminist theorists, Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray, to name a few, argue that biological differences necessitate textual differences, while others reject this essentialist position, considering it just another means for perpetuating the notion of female inferiority. Many linguists assert that women use language differently than men, and that texts reflect these differences. But in order to analyze the origin of any textual differences, it is necessary to look beyond biology and linguistic performance, to concentrate on psychology and its wider implications in the cultural world. Because Brigitte Schwaiger's text, Wie kommt das Salz ins Meer. contains a number of elements which underscore the extent that psychology and culture influence text production, it will serve as the focus of this paper. While this work can be classified as a female Bildungs- or Reifungs-roman - a narrative about the development of a modem consciousness and the attendant struggles involved - it serves in a wider sense as an example of the "difference" argued by many feminists between male and female texts.

Stasi, sex and soundtracks: Thomas Brussig's Postalgie

Nijdam, Elizabeth 30 July 2007 (has links)
Since the fall of the Wall, a new era of East German literature has emerged. This genre of literature exists even though East Germany’s borders dissolved over a decade and half ago and is challenging the way we think about the former German Democratic Republic. East German author Thomas Brussig is pivotal in this new genre of literature. His novels Helden wie wir (1995), Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee (1999) and Leander Haußmann’s cinematic adaptation, Sonnenallee (1999), confront the negative associations and stereotypes connected with East Germany to deconstruct how formal history has portrayed its past and its citizens. Brussig’s texts take a completely different approach to remembering the GDR, which simultaneously challenges history’s dominant perspective as well as the Ostalgie phenomenon. Through his texts’ recollection, Brussig subverts the East German state in hindsight and begins the construction of a new mythology with which to associate former East Germany.

Vukelic, Natasa January 2017 (has links)
Stephan Groetzner is a contemporary German writer whose book So ist das is said to be mysterious— the novel surprises with its conciseness as well as the mix of an unusual, almost poetic form and a simple syntax. It thus opens the doors to various interpretations. The thesis deals with the question if the brief and concise language in So ist das influences the development of the narrative elements time and space. Furthermore, it canvasses the consequences its influence might have when it comes to genre attribution. The essential theories for the discussion are Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan's Narrative Fiction, Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics as well as Nicole Mahne's Transmediale Erzähltheorie, with a narratological perspective on time and space. Moreover, literary-historical works like Andrew Thacker's The Imagist Poets, Yoshinobu Hakutani's Haiku and Modernist Poetics, Bertram Müller's Absurde Literatur in Rußland as well as Albert Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus play a decisive role in the analysis. The goal of this thesis is to bring the unique style of a rather unknown contemporary writer from Germany into the context of other art forms like comics, haiku, imagism and absurdism, and to discuss what kind of outcomes the conciseness might have, regarding its influence on the narrative elements time and space as well as on the genre attribution.

Auswertung Veranstalter- und Teilnehmerbefragung Juniordoktor 2012/13

Scheufler, Thomas 25 April 2016 (has links)
