The psychosocial influences on the family of a child diagnosed with cancer

Swanepoel, Monique (Marais) January 2014 (has links)
Cancer affects everyone; it does not distinguish between age, race, gender or social background. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, it does not only affect the child, but also the family system as a whole. The focus of this study was on the psychosocial aspects that are affected in the family system once a child diagnosed with cancer. These psychosocial aspects included the emotional impact, the spousal impact, the role changes that occur in the family system, the financial impact, the impact on siblings as well as the impact on religion and spirituality. These aspects were investigated by the researcher during the applied study. This applied study used a qualitative approach with a collective case study research design. The research population of this study included families who have a child diagnosed with cancer, who was treated at Nicus Lodge Cancer Treatment Centre in Pretoria which is a CANSA affiliate. The staff at Nicus Lodge selected participants who met the criteria based on purposive sampling, on behalf of the researcher. The researcher used semi-structured interviews and an interview schedule in order to obtain the participants’ experiences of their child diagnosed with cancer and the psychosocial effects it had on them as a family system. Nine participants participated in the study. The interviews were recorded with the permission of the participants and then later transcribed. Creswell’s steps for qualitative data analysis were implemented. By utilizing these measures and tools, the researcher was able to formulate findings from which conclusions and recommendations could be made. From the findings, the following themes and sub-themes were identified, demonstrating the psychosocial effect that a child diagnosed with cancer has on the family system and answering the research question: Theme 1: Protective measures with the sub-themes of religion, support structures and personality. Theme 2: Restrictive measures with the sub-themes of role changes, single parent, multiple children and date of diagnosis. Theme 3: Financial related aspects with the sub-themes of employment/unemployment, supportive employer, transport and medical aid. The findings demonstrated that many different aspects of a family system are affected when a child is diagnosed with cancer. It also demonstrated that a family system that had the necessary protective measures, were able to cope more effectively and maintain their quality of life when their child was diagnosed with cancer. The findings furthermore showed specific focus areas that a social worker in the health care setting, specifically in the oncology field, should focus on which hinder family systems from coping effectively. These focus areas enable the social workers to provide adequate supportive services to the families of a child diagnosed with cancer. Supportive services are imperative when dealing with a family of a child diagnosed with cancer, and this is one of the recommendations of the study and a focus area for future studies. Recommendations from this study can be used by social workers in the health care field to better understand the challenges that families of a child diagnosed with cancer experience and how to effectively address their needs. Social workers can also utilize the recommendations to find ways to make their services known to the communities and improve their intervention and supportive services to these families. It is important for social workers to improve awareness in the community and to provide them with the necessary resources to cope better with the situation. To better understand this paper, certain key terms were used by the researcher. / Dissertation (MSW)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / tm2015 / Social Work and Criminology / MSW / Unrestricted

Flexibelt arbete och arbetsmiljöarbete : En intervjustudie om chefers upplevelser av att leda psykosocialt arbetsmiljöarbete när medarbetare arbetar flexibelt

Lantz, Erika January 2023 (has links)
Aim: The aim of the study was to study managers' experiences of leading the psychosocial work environment work in organizations with flexible work.  Method: To answer the purpose, a qualitative method with an inductive approach has been applied. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews where nine managers in municipal operations were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed and the material was analyzed with a qualitative content analysis, with manifest interpretation.   Results and conclusion: The analysis resulted in four main categories with a total of thirteen subcategories. The results showed that flexible work contributes to managerial and leadership challenges linked to psychosocial work environment work. Despite this, attitudes towards flexible working were generally positive among managers, largely due to the predominantly positive effects flexible working was shown to have on employees and their well-being. Therefore, it is concluded that the managerial and leadership challenges identified in the study are compensated by the positive effects flexible working has on employees and their well-being, which is favorable for sustainable psychosocial work environment work.

Latino Cultural Competency in Social Work Education: A Review of the Literature

Menendez, Liana 01 May 2015 (has links)
Cultural competence serves as resource for social workers and other helping professionals to improve service delivery by using approaches that are compatible with the client’s cultural values and beliefs. As the Latino population continues to grow, understanding the culture has important implications for social work practice, advocacy and research. There is a dearth of cultural competence training and educational programs that seek to effectively identify, address and meet the unique cultural and linguistic needs of Latinos. With the growing population and a lack of culturally responsive services, clinicians familiar with the Latino culture and Latino cultural competency training and education programs, disparities among Latinos will continue to steadily rise. It is important for social work students and clinicians to receive advanced training in understanding the diverse needs of Latino populations. The purpose of this thesis is to review the existing literature to identify culturally competent practice methods and examine efforts to prepare social work students and clinicians to work with the Latino population. A search was conducted using PsychINFO, PubMed, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) and Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases. Key terms used in the searches were“cultural competency training”, “cultural competency education” and/or “social work/clinician” coupled with terms Hispanic or Latino. This thesis concludes with some considerations for integrating Latino cultural competency into the social work curriculum.

Social work students' comfort with gay and lesbian families

Ackerman, Jennifer 01 May 2013 (has links)
Despite recent advancements in legislation and policies regarding gay and lesbian Americans, negative attitudes and perceptions toward this population still exist. Anecdotal information from social work classroom interactions suggests that biases against gays and lesbian families may exist among those being trained as helping professionals. This study examined social work student comfort with gay and lesbian families. The researcher used an exploratory-descriptive research design, with a sample of 85 Bachelors level social work students (BSW) and Masters level social work students (MSW) who completed the 52 item online questionnaire related to gay and lesbian parenting. The findings from the research suggest the presence of a statistically significant relationship between students' attitudes towards gays and lesbians and students' comfort level with same sex parents. The researcher discusses the significance of the study and the implications for social work practice and education.

Meningsfullt arbete : En kvalitativ undersökning av vad som gör arbete meningsfullt. / Meaningful Work : A Qualitative Study of What Makes Work Meaningful.

Ejbyfeldt, Simon January 2024 (has links)
This thesis delves into the exploration of meaningful work by examining the narratives and experiences of employees. Employing a theory-elaborative approach while utilizing Laaser and Karlsson's (2022) typology of autonomy, recognition, and dignity as a foundational framework of meaningful work. This investigation centers on firsthand accounts, with four social workers from a municipality in Sweden providing insights through four in-depth interviews and thus shedding light on what holds importance within the context of their work.  Aligned with the theory, patterns surfaced in informants' statements, indicating interdependent relationships among conditions fostering recognition, dignity, and autonomy at work. While cautioning against asserting causation, this observation emerged organically during empirical analysis. Additionally, the study identifies an unexplored dimension within the typology of meaningful work—the emotional dimension. Recognizing the pivotal role of emotion management and emotional experiences, this dimension can enrich our understanding of employees' perceptions of meaningful work. The essay demonstrates the foundational role of formal and informal autonomy, acting as a cornerstone where other dimensions converge to create a meaningful work experience. Whether originating from formal or informal channels, autonomy empowers employees to establish a sphere independent of the formal organization. This autonomy, illustrated by examples such as schedule flexibility and break adjustments, strengthens the informal organization's capacity to uphold dimensions of dignity, recognition, and emotional well-being (cf. Laaser & Karlsson, 2022).

Parental leave policy and reproductive work : A quantitative study of men’s share of housework and care work in 27 countries

Nylén, Annie January 2022 (has links)
The gender division of care work and housework is a product of numerous factors, both individual and national. By using the ‘Equal Gender Division of Labour’ (EGDL) indicator developed by Dearing (2016a), this thesis assesses correlations between parental leave policy and division of reproductive labour in 27 countries. OLS regression was used to test the hypothesis and determine correlations. By controlling for the correlations of individual attitudes, the thesis attempted to isolate the effects of parental leave policies. The results indicate that parental leave policies which promote gender equality are positively correlated with men’s larger shares of care work and housework. When control variables are added, the results demonstrate how parental leave policy is directly correlated with men’s larger share of care work. As for men’s share of housework, the thesis suggests that the original correlations are due to the effect of individual attitudes, which may also be impacted by parental leave policy.

Neoprávněné užití autorského díla / Unlawful use of a copyrighted work

Vik, Michal January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the topic of unauthorized use of copyrighted work. The aim of the thesis is to offer the reader an insight into the issue of the use of copyrighted work in general and the current possibilities of copyright protection in the Czech Republic. For this purpose, it defines basic copyright terms, by which it acquaints the readers with the content of the rights of authors and other entitled persons, as well as the claims that such persons may claim in the event of unauthorized interference with their rights. By listing the cases and the ways of fair use of the copyrighted works, the reader will, a contrario, be introduced to the issue of unauthorized use and unauthorized interventions, and consequently the claims with which one can defend against such unauthorized interventions. At the same time, the reader will be informed of the responsibilities and penalties that threaten the violators of the protected rights, whether civil, administrative or criminal. The thesis also attempts to compare the new amendment of the Copyright Act, especially in the field of collective management of copyright and related rights, based on the implementation of Directive 2014/26/EU, which substantially changed the form of Title IV of the Copyright Act. It also reports on the recent changes in...
