Social Image of Fictions by Yang Kui

Ke, Hong-Cen 01 September 2011 (has links)
¡@¡@The literature of Yang Kui clearly reflects his perception and expectation towards the social-reality life at the time. Yang Kui casts his ideas into literature as a manifestation of social consciousness and literature. Nonetheless, what is the major discussion of social consciousness for the literature of Yang Kui? Which social issues are presented from his literature? Has he proposed any kind of mindset for social reform among his works? Most importantly, what is the origin of his social thought? What shall be the outlook when we conduct research on these issues through social science other than from literature fields? ¡@¡@The paper applies ¡§Culture Research Method¡¨ as the research approach in attempt to analyze the formation of social thought by Yang Kui through literature, history and sociology dimensions, as well as incorporating social thoughts into literature. With regards to analysis on literature and history, the novels published by Yang Kui before his death is used as the scope of the paper analysis with historical review on the content of novels and life course. With regards to the sociology with basis from the ¡§National System: Social Theory¡¨ proposed by Lorenz von Stein and interpreted by Daw-Yih Jang, the social issues portrayed from Yang Kui¡¦s novels and the methods of social reform proposed are hence communicated. ¡@¡@With regards to the origin of the Yan Kui¡¦s social thoughts, all books regarding to political or thinking were subject to tight control due to the Japanese colonization over Taiwan. The enlightenment of the social thoughts by Yang Kui originated from his study in Japan, during the Taisho period (1912-1926) when coincided with the surge of democracy. Yang Kui was able to absorb new knowledge and thereby solidified his ideas of socialism. To trace the origin, the paper discussed the social democratic atmosphere shaped from the Taisho Period after Meiji Restoration, from the dimension of how Japanese Constitutional System turned to Prussia German and the profound impact of the development of contemporary Japanese Constitutional System on German Scholar, Lorenz von Stein. ¡@¡@Yang Kui underwent twice regime changes in his life and in terms of novels, Yang Kui implemented anti-monarchy and anti-colonial oppression as the manifestation of social consciousness and literature during the Japanese Colonial Period. During the National Government Period, Yang Kui announced the ¡§Peace Declaration¡¨ to ease ethnic conflict however he ended up in prison for 12 years. His literature style also changed; who no longer confronted authorities but continued to care for the society through inspirational articles. The paper divides the social issues discussed in the novels by Yang Kui and organized his ideas towards social reform, then supplemented by the social issues concerned by Yang in order to observe the legislative trends on social issues from Taiwanese Government.

Topics in Random Knots and R-Matrices from Frobenius Algebras

Karadayi, Enver 27 October 2010 (has links)
In this dissertation, we study two areas of interest in knot theory: Random knots in the unit cube, and the Yang-Baxter solutions constructed from Frobenius algebras. The study of random knots can be thought of as a model of DNA strings situated in confinement. A random knot with n vertices is a polygonal loop formed by selecting n distinct points in the unit cube, for a positive integer n, and connecting these points by straight line segments successively, such that the last point selected is joined with the first one. We present a step by step description of our algorithm and Maple codes for generating random knots in the unit cube, with a given vertex number n. To detect non-trivial knots, we use a knot invariant called the determinant. We present an algorithm and its Maple code for computing the determinant for random knots. For each vertex number n, we generate large number of random knots and form data sets of values of the determinant. Then we analyze our data sets in various ways. For instance, for each vertex number n, we form data sets of the number of p-colorable random knots by finding the set of prime divisors of each determinant output. We define the stick number for p-colorability to be the minimum number of line segments required to form a p-colorable knot. We use our data sets to find upper bounds for stick numbers for p-colorability, for primes p _ 191. We also find distributions of p-colorable knots and small determinant values. The second topic on random knots is the linking number of random links. A random link is a collection of disjoint random knots produced simultaneously. We present descriptions of our algorithm and its Maple code for constructing random links of two components, and calculating their linking numbers in detail. By running the code for 1000 times, for the vertex number n less than or equal to 30, we obtain data sets of linking numbers for two-component random links such that each component is a random knot with n vertices. Then we find the distribution of linking numbers and calculate upper bounds for the stick number for the linking numbers ` _ 15. The second area we investigate is applications of Fobenius algebras to knot theory. Chain complexes and Yang-Baxter solutions (R-matrices) are constructed by the skein theoretic approach using Frobenius algebras, and deformed R-matrices are constructed by using 2-cocyles. We compute cohomology groups, Yang-Baxter solutions and their cocycle deformations for group algebras, polynomial algebras and complex numbers. We construct knot and link invariants using these R-matrices from Frobenius algebras via Turaev’s criteria. Then a series of skein relations of the invariant are introduced for oriented knot or link diagrams. We also present calculations of the Frobenius skein invariant for various knots and links.

Making news in the People's Republic of China: the case of CCTV-9

Jirik, John Charles, 1960- 29 August 2008 (has links)
This dissertation explores the news making process at CCTV-9, the Beijing-based global English language service of China Central Television (CCTV). My interest in this topic was triggered by the strange manner in which so much debate about media reform in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) elides any real discussion of the contribution of journalists themselves to reform, which is almost invariably treated as something that happens to media from outside of, or regardless of, what journalists do. My aim in this research was to address this lapsus and foreground the work of journalists to show how it contributes to the changing institutional framework in which their work is embedded and therefore contributes to media reform. Drawing on ground-breaking work on bounded innovation and resistance by Pan Zhongdang and Lu Ye in this emerging field, I utilize concepts derived from their use of Michel de Certeau and discuss these concepts in light of the works of Antonio Gramsci, Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault to show how journalists at CCTV-9 exercised control over their work, despite their function as mouthpieces of the news and publicity system operated by the Communist Party of China and PRC government. I am not suggesting that PRC journalists are dissidents. However, my research did suggest that the mundane practice of journalism, even in so constrained a media environment as that of the PRC news system, can alter the manner in which news is made and thereby contribute to media reform. Utilizing participant observation of the CCTV-9 newsroom in 2004-2005, interviews with a range of news makers, in-house documents and a survey of content, I construct a picture of news making at CCTV-9 that foregrounds what to more macro-oriented analyses of media reform in the PRC has remained inaccessible, the minutiae of everyday life in the newsroom, and the tiny, but not inconsequential changes brought about by the ordinary work of journalists. / text

Understanding Chinese and Western cultures : an exploration of the academic working environment in internationalised higher education

Zhang, Xiaozheng January 2012 (has links)
This thesis looks at the understanding of Chinese and Western cultures within the academic working environment of internationalised higher education, and the influence on their working relationships. This research takes an interpretivist, qualitative approach. It is based on four different organisational contexts of internationalised higher education in Mainland China, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. The four organisational contexts include a Chinese case, a Collaborative case, a Colonialism case and a British case. Qualitative interview data were collected from seventy Chinese and Western academic staff. The research examines academic staff s interpretation of Western (Hofstede s cultural dimensions) and Chinese cultural values (Guanxi, Mianzi and Harmony). The key findings are Guanxi, Mianzi and Harmony are closely related to Hofstede s cultural dimensions. Particularly, with the support of the Chinese Yin-Yang theory, it demonstrates that Hofstede s bipolar cultural dimensions are not sufficient to explain the Chinese culture. The findings also show that Western expatriate academics have stronger cultural sensitivity than the Chinese indigenous academics. Furthermore, the findings show that the organisational context has a stronger impact than the national one on employees cultural understanding and working relationships. Based on the findings, practical implications are discussed as well as limitations and recommendations for future research.
