Blignault, Madeleine Hildegarde 10 November 2005 (has links)

2. Wat waardeoordrag betref:

Moeders speel die belangrikste rol in sosialiseringsverwante waardes.

Vanweë verskeie faktore speel vaders 'n minder belangrike rol.

ENGLISH: The purpose of this study was to determine, within the family ecology perspective, the priority values of a group of young adult females and to identifY the family members involved in the transmission of these values. A literature review was conducted on:

The properties, functions, classifications of values as well as concepts related to values.

The role of culture in values.

The structures, roles and functions of the family in the development of a system of values.

Various theories explaining the development of the young adult were connected to the development of values.

Qualitative and quantitative methods and techniques were selected for this study. Triangulation, a general principle to enhance validity, was applied to various stages of the study. A questionnaire was constructed to determine the social demographic profile of the participants. A Likert-type scale and two questionnaires were constructed to determine the significance of the twenty categories of values. The items of the Likert-type scale were linked to specific situations. Two questionnaires were constructed to distinguish between the family members (amongst others) involved in the transmission of the twenty categories of values. The participants comprised of 154 young adult female nurses at a selected college in Gauteng. This group included Afrikaans and English speaking Whites, Coloureds, Indians as well as Sotho, Tswana, Xhosa and Zulu speaking Blacks. In addition to the above participants three Tswana speaking Black and three Afrikaans speaking White young adult nurses were interviewed on developmental and family tasks to identify and clarify the transmission of values in their family. Field studies and interviews with informants at various stages of the research process generated, confirmed and clarified information. 1. On value priorities:

The following value categories were regarded as important: religious, occupation, relations, bodily, life, economy, morality, self: safety, intellect, time and space, the law and disposition.

The less important value categories were: culture, recreation, nature and aesthetics.

The least important value categories were: national, authority and politics.

2. On the transmission of values:

Mothers play the most important role in values related to socialization.

The role of the father is of lesser importance due to various factors.

Members of the nuclear and extended family also participate in transmitting values.

The school and church are important role players in religious values.

The media, role models and friends play an important role in values related to politics, nature and self concept.

3. On the demographic profile:

The participants represented the lower and middle income groups.

Christianity is the dominant religion of these groups. Most of the Indians are Hindus.

To conclude the inter-relatedness of value categories and the important influence of context were discussed to develop models and theories were developed. / Thesis (PhD (Consumer Sience))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Consumer Science / unrestricted

Effect of controlled vitamin B-6 intake on in vitro lymphocyte proliferation and interleuken 2 production in young women

Wang, Xu, 1954- 03 May 1995 (has links)
In two studies we tested the effect of vitamin B-6 (B-6) intake on in vitro lymphocyte, proliferation and IL-2 production in healthy young women. In Study I, 6 women were fed a constant diet containing 0.84 mg (4.96 μmols) of B-6 for 12 d, and 1.24 mg (7.33 μmols) and 2.44 mg (14.42 μmols) of B-6 during two subsequent 10-d periods. Lymphocyte proliferation in response to the mitogens concanavalin A (Con A) and pokeweed mitogen (PWM) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) at 2.44 mg than at 0.84 mg intake and the pre-study value. In Study II, 10 women who consumed their self-selected diets were randomly divided into a PN and a placebo group of five each. Following a 5-d baseline period, the PN group received a daily supplement of 1.5 mg (7.29 μmols) and 50 mg (243 μmols) pyridoxine.HC1 (PN.HC1) for 7 and 6 d, respectively. This was followed by a 28-d washout period during which no supplement or placebo was administered. After daily 1.5 mg supplementary PN.HC1 for seven days, lymphocyte proliferation in response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA), Con A and PWM, and IL-2 production were significantly higher than the baseline (p < 0.05) and that of the placebo group (p < 0.05). The 50 mg PN.HC1 supplement increased IL-2 production, but not lymphocyte proliferation as compared with the 1.5 mg PN.HC1 supplement period. Lymphocyte proliferation and IL-2 production were significantly correlated with lymphocyte pyridoxal 5'- phosphate concentrations (p < 0.01). We conclude that a B-6 intake of 1.5 to 2 times the RDA improves lymphocyte proliferation and IL-2 production in healthy young women and this effect of B-6 on immunocompetence is transitory. To explore the basis for the effect of B-6 on immune function, putrescine was added to the culture medium (2 - 200 μmol/L). In vitro lymphocyte proliferation and IL-2 production were not changed by the addition of putrescine under our experimental conditions. / Graduation date: 1995

The Pure, the Pious and the Preyed Upon; A Celebration of Celibacy and the Erasure of Young Women's Sexual Agency

Bachechi, Kimberly N. January 2009 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Zine Magubane / Using content analysis of the three largest United States Newsweeklies this thesis explores representations of young women's sexuality during the early 2000's. While popular culture during this period is focused on "Girls Gone Wild" causing widespread feminist concern over the "third wave's" definition of a feminist sexuality, no young women with sexual agency are presented in the magazines. Instead the women presented, who are overwhelmingly white, are either too pure to posses any information regarding sexual activities, engaged in sexual activities that they are coerced or forced into, or are celibate. The combination of these discourses expose a narrative of female empowerment through chastity that mirrors the Victorian-era ideals of white womanhood. Using post-colonial theory the thesis argues that this representation, combined with the erasure of all other alternatives is indicative of a identity crisis within the collective United Sates conscious. / Thesis (MA) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College. Os sentidos de futuro para jovens negras: pelos caminhos do Capão Redondo e Jardim Ângela periferia paulistana / Senses of Future for Young Black Women: In the Track of Capão Redondo and Jardim Ângela in the city of São Paulo

Mendes, Carlos Eduardo 23 May 2014 (has links)
Esperamos que este trabalho tenha podido colaborar com a psicologia social, mas principalmente, tenha colaborado, de alguma forma, com o futuro das juventudes que se expressam na região do Capão Redondo e do Jardim Ângela / The senses of future given by young Black women from the districts of Capão Redondo and Jardim Ângela, outskirt of the city of São Paulo, are the ambitioned theme of this work. How they can have a sense of future when the statistics demonstrate: they live in an area traditionally affected by massacres from death squads; they live in an area where drug dealers do business besides the police station; they live in an area where some police officers are as much feared as the criminals. They live in an area where the homicide is the major cause of mortality of young male Black people . They live in an area where they are the last in the social mobility and in the chance of employment. However, they keep struggling for life. The research, therefore, aimed to listen to these young women, it was based in a qualitative approach, considering a method that brings their experiences throughout their life trajectories, as well as their projections towards a forthcoming period in their lives. Exploring these young womens senses of future revealed their strategies to affront and to feel acknowledged before the historic process of social humiliation in which the Black population has been living particularly in the case of Capão Redondo and Jardim Ângela. Three expressions of their sense of future came up: the first one involved the denial that they would have a future; the second one was the projection of a future with another person in a love relationship; the third one was built as life projects, be that a professional one, a cultural one or a political one. We hope this piece of work might have contributed to the Social Psychology, but mostly to the future of the youth manifested in the area of Capão Redondo and Jardim Ângela

Discurso de jovens grávidas: uma abordagem fenomenológico-hermenêutica à luz de Heidegger / Discourse of pregnant young women: a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach in the light of Heidegger

Moura, José Valdez de Castro 08 October 1996 (has links)
The present work intends to present a study of the Young Pregnant Mothers discourse\'s through the Phenomenological Method, based in Heidegger\'s Daseinanalysis. Asking for the understanding of the reffered discourses mean\'s, we tried to give a new approach in the pregnancy question, considering the subject\'s point of view for them represented, in order to obtain a real recuperation in medical-preventive educative focalization of pregnancy in adolescent mothers. Furthermore, this study also represents an effort with the finality of the Qualitative Method application (mainly, the phenomenological) in the Public Health Field, with the emphasis in Mother-Child Health Care\'s Programs.

"Strategies for negotiating absent fathers among young people in Soweto, South Africa"

Mdletshe, Prudence 22 July 2014 (has links)
The family has been seen as playing an important part in children’s lives and their development. This is because families are seen to be the primary sources of individual development and thus should be seen as the building blocks of communities. Families serve as the main source of emotional, social and material support for most individuals. Thus, stable family environments are acknowledged to provide a fertile environment for children’s wellbeing and for them to grow up to be healthy responsible adults. Most South African children are raised by a single mother or by their maternal grandparents. Research conducted shows that South African Families face many challenges, and these challenges could be the source for high rates of absent fathers. Poverty has been identified to be one of the challenges that affect families in South Africa. Some researchers argue that poverty and inequality continue to undermine the family as an institution by reducing its effectiveness in realizing the roles of its members in society. Therefore poverty puts a burden on families and specifically on the main providers or ‘breadwinners’. Poverty in South Africa is mainly caused by lack of income, which is due to the high unemployment rates with little initiatives to reduce unemployment rates. The research was conducted qualitatively and specifically used narrative inquiry as a method of gathering data. In-depth, one-on-one narrative interviews were conducted in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the consequences of having an absent father and the strategies that young women adopted in order to deal with the consequences. Eight interviews with females aged from 18 – 21 years were conducted in Soweto. The findings reveal that the participants adopted both negative and positive coping strategies. Positive coping strategies include, creative writing, keeping a diary, maintaining a positive attitude, living a different life and speaking to others. Negative coping strategies included withdrawing from others, denial of a need of a father, self-blame, silence and defensive humor. More research is needed on how young people with absent fathers cope, paying into consideration issues of personality, culture and socialization.
