Medborgarskap genom lika möjligheter eller jämlikhet?

This essays key aspect was to investigate how Swedish and Finnish curriculum for upper secondary school, in relation to each other, integrate and implement the notion of citizenship, equality and equivalence. Due to Swedish students preforming under the average in international knowledge measurements, such as PISA, and with Finnish students preforming as one of the top five countries, a question that came to surround this essay was raised. ‘What similarities/differences can be made clear the Swedish and Finnish curriculum regarding work and design of citizenship, equality and equivalence?’ To answer this question, this essay started off by defining and analysing the key notions of citizenship, equality and equivalence. After thoroughly reading through the Swedish and Finnish curriculums general parts and the subject plan for social science the result was established. The result was then analysed with the notions citizenship, equality and equivalence, with Swedish and international literature. The results showed a strong anchoring of the citizenship throughout both the Swedish and the Finnish curriculum and the subject plan for social science. The analysed result also showed a clear lack of equality integrated in the Swedish curriculum in comparison to the Finnish curriculum and the lack of student influence in the Finnish curriculum.
