The measurement of blood pressure is a routine procedure in the practice of nurses and its learning is a concern for educational institutions, due to failures can occur by knowledge insufficiencies. The lack of knowledge and ability culminate in the compromise of the obtained values of the measurement, interfering in the clinical evaluation of the patient. The aim of this study was to analyze the knowledge and ability of undergraduate nursing students from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, in Natal / RN, enrolled in the 5th to 9th period of the course, regarding the measurement of blood pressure. It was, therefore, a cross-sectional, quantitative and analytical study carried out at the Nursing Department of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Natal / Rio Grande do Norte. The population subject to the study was 204 students, and the sample was 76 participants based on an alphabetical list of all the academics of each period, who were selected between the odd numbers to development of the research. The study was evaluated by the Research Ethics Committee of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital (CAAE No. 0002.0.294.000-10) with a favorable opinion. The analysis of the knowledge of the subjects occurred through the application of a structured and validated questionnaire, with objective questions divided into: sociodemographic characteristics and professional / work experience, and knowledge about the procedure. The skillfulness check occurred in a simulated laboratory, with the appropriate or inadequate judgment of the items of a pre-validated checklist regarding the procedure. The results were analyzed in statistical software using descriptive and inferential statistics, using the Shapiro-Wilk test to verify the normality of the data and the Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests, adopting significance level ? ? 0 , 05. There was a predominance of young women with incomes up until 5 minimum wages, with no previous activity in the care experience or nursing training, with only 6.6% working in the area and 5.3% still working. About the knowledge evaluation, students presented an average of 56.6 correct answers, highlighting that the ninth period had highest rate in average (62.2). Dividing the analysis by the questions, it was observed that questions 6 and 9 had better adequacy results; in the evaluation of the variable concepts steps of the technique, the five periods of the course presented statistical significance. In relation to assessment and ability, there was a percentage of 89.5% of adequability and an average of the technique level of 60.5%. When comparing the knowledge and the ability of the academics, it was verified that in all the periods there is a better ability with in relation to knowledge presenting significance in all the periods. It was concluded the rejection of the null hypothesis and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis that there is a significant difference between the knowledge and ability of nursing students to measure BP in different periods of the course. The study presents passive repercussions content for teachers and teaching institutions by collaborating on the training of nurses, improving teaching and reflections about the blood pressure measurement procedure.
