Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Perspectives on the aging falls within the field of aging studies as one of many ways to look at, and think about, the various possibilities of living the old age, from a
reading of gender in the center of Santa Maria. This is a qualitative survey conducted for eleven months, which used techniques such as participant observation, some formal interviews and, predominantly, informal interviews/conversations. The theme of this research relates to the representations and meanings of signals that define bodies and subjects identified as old. I understand that the way men aged 60 years
or more produce meanings about aging is part of a field, dynamic and conflicting, of practices and discourses production that allow subjects recognition and grouping
identified as old or not from certain physical laws. In this sense, the different ways to classify the subjects and the meaning they acquire to define ways of aging have
implications on how different actors act against human aging. Old age, as age category, has served to classify people of a certain age as belonging to this age
group and thus, identifying them as old people. However, classifying people who are in the same age group from a homogeneous category as "the" old age becomes very
problematic, since despises the complex differences that exist within the group of subjects identified as old, besides the fact that anyone will hardly recognize himself
as old, because the old age is always associated with decay, sickness, senility and the proximity to death. Therefore, I propose a reading of gender to understand how
the ways of being men and women and different social constructions of male and female make the representations and practices of men with regard to aging. In this
sense, the gender knowledge do not only creates meanings about men and women relations, but also organizes the sociability spaces as gendered spaces. I propose to understand, therefore, that the grammar of space set the center as a public space of men's everyday sociability, as a principle of the sexual vision and division of the world, which form a system of perception, thought
and action categories, and allows to bring into play values and images of aging from the humor expressed in jokes and in conversations imbued with playfulness about
body and sexuality. Sexuality, in this context, becomes an important tool to understand how a series of body condition confirm when someone may be considered old. I intend to demonstrate how the body marks, which define the
capacity for sexual activity - represented by the erection - report on the representations of what is considered being old or not. This is how I seek to grasp
how sexuality becomes, in the context of the city center, one element among many others, to understand how these men are meaning aging. / Olhares sobre o envelhecer insere-se no campo dos estudos sobre envelhecimento como uma das muitas formas de olhar para, e pensar sobre, as várias possibilidades de viver a velhice, a partir de uma leitura de gênero no centro da cidade de Santa Maria. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa realizada durante onze meses, em que se utilizou de técnicas como a observação participante, algumas entrevistas formais
e, predominantemente, entrevistas/conversas informais. O tema central desta pesquisa refere-se às representações e às significações de marcas que definem corpos e sujeitos ditos velhos. Compreendo que o modo como homens com 60 anos
ou mais produzem significados sobre envelhecimento está inserido em um campo, dinâmico e conflitante, de produção de práticas e discursos que permitem reconhecer e agrupar sujeitos como velhos ou não, a partir de determinados
estatutos corporais. Nesse sentido, as diferentes formas de classificar os sujeitos e o significado que estas classificações adquirem para definir formas de envelhecer têm implicações no modo como diferentes atores agem frente ao envelhecimento humano. A velhice, como categoria etária, tem servido para classificar pessoas de determinada idade como pertencentes a este grupo etário e, assim, classificando-as como pessoas velhas. Contudo, classificar pessoas que estão na mesma faixa etária a partir de uma categoria homogênea como a velhice torna-se bastante
problemático, já que despreza as complexas diferenciações existentes dentro do grupo de sujeitos ditos velhos, além do fato de que dificilmente alguém se reconhecerá como velho, porque velhice é sempre associada à decadência, à
doença, à senilidade e à proximidade com a morte. Por isso, proponho uma leitura de gênero para entender como as formas de ser homem e mulher e as construções socialmente distintas de masculino e feminino compõem as representações e práticas de homens no que diz respeito ao envelhecimento. Nesse sentido, o saber sobre gênero não produz apenas significados sobre as relações entre homens e mulheres, mas também organiza os espaços de sociabilidades como espaços gendrados. Proponho entender, deste modo, que a gramática dos espaços configura o centro como um espaço público de sociabilidade masculina cotidiana, a partir de um princípio de visão e divisão sexualizantes do mundo, que forma um sistema de categorias de percepção, de pensamento e de ação, e permite colocar em jogo valores e imagens sobre envelhecimento a partir do humor expresso nas piadas e nas conversas impregnadas de jocosidade sobre corpo e sexualidade. A sexualidade, neste contexto, torna-se uma importante ferramenta para compreender como uma série de condições corporais confirma quando alguém pode
ser considerado velho. Procuro mostrar como as marcas corporais, que definem a capacidade para a atividade sexual representada pela ereção informam sobre as representações do que é ser velho ou não. É desta maneira que busco apreender como a sexualidade torna-se, no contexto do centro da cidade, um elemento, entre tantos outros, para entender como estes homens estão significando o
envelhecimento.
