Machado, imagens que foram constru?das em um determinado espa?o: a Cidade do
Natal. Am?lia, uma mossoroense de vida simples, passou a ter uma vida luxuosa ao
casar com o rico comerciante portugu?s Manoel Machado, em 1904. Ela levou uma vida
de dama da sociedade, residia em uma resid?ncia suntuosa, viajou para a Europa,
frequentava o Teatro da cidade e cuidava da imagem social de seu esposo, abrindo as
portas da sua casa para a promo??o de jantares e recep??es. Vivenciou as
transforma??es ocorridas em Natal nas primeiras tr?s d?cadas do s?culo XX, quando
por iniciativa de uma elite pol?tica e intelectual a cidade passou a incorporar valores
burgueses e a dotar de uma estrutura t?cnica voltada para os melhoramentos trazidos
pela Revolu??o Industrial. Em 1934, com a morte do marido, assumiu os neg?cios da
fam?lia. Al?m de vi?va, tornou-se tamb?m uma mulher empreendedora. A vi?va Am?lia
Machado tamb?m passou a ser alvo de suspeitas da popula??o, boatos sobre sua vida. A
partir da? emerge uma figura amedrontadora em Natal, um ser que capturava e comia o
f?gado de crian?as, o papa-figo da Cidade do Natal, a Vi?va Machado. Na presente
pesquisa, iremos relacionar diferentes imagens que circularam sobre essa mulher, que
foi dama da sociedade, vi?va arrojada e papa-figo, articulando essas representa??es com
o discurso sobre o feminino que circulava na Natal das d?cadas 1900 a 1930. Ainda
levantaremos hip?teses sobre a cria??o da Lenda da Vi?va Machado / The research project examines representations elaborated about Amelia Duarte
Machado, images that were built in a particular space: the Natal City. Amelia, one

Machado. In this research, we relate different images that circulated about this woman,
who was society lady, dashing widow and papa-figo, articulating these representations
with the discourse on female circulating in Natal from 1900 to 1930 yet will raise
hypotheses about the creation of the Legend of the Widow Machado
