Previous issue date: 2007-04-02 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / This study aims to demonstrate that the United States of America have always tried to
dissimulate their interventions in Latin America. Ever since the independence of Latin-
American colonies, the U.S. have been trying to justify their expansionism in the region. To
the end of the Cold War , the interventions were justified by the rhetoric of the contention of
external threatens European recolonization and Soviet communism with the end of the
bipolar conflict, the domination has won a new justification, i. e., the necessity of keeping the
order and promote democracy. Thus, hegemony began to be exerted through the North-
American capacity of imposing its values democracy and free trade in the region. / Este estudo tem por finalidade mostrar que os Estados Unidos sempre buscaram dissimular
suas intervenções na América Latina. Desde a independência das colônias latino-americanas
os Estados Unidos vêm justificando seu expansionismo na região. Até o final da Guerra Fria,
as intervenções eram justificadas pela retórica da contenção das ameaças externas
recolonização européia e comunismo soviético com o final do conflito bipolar, a dominação
ganhou nova justificativa, qual seja, a necessidade de manter a ordem e promover a
democracia. Assim, a hegemonia passou a ser exercida através da capacidade norte-americana
de introjetar seus valores democracia e livre mercado na região.
