Ate 2001, pesquisas mostraram tambem que cerca de 52 milhoes de americanos ja tinham consultado a internet para informacoes medicas. Nesse sentido, tornam-se importantes pesquisas para melhor compreender o uso da internet para Saúde: seus riscos, beneficios e padroes existentes. Objetivo: Avancar no entendimento sobre o perfil do usuario e as tendencias de busca por informacoes de Saúde na internet. Metodos: As analises foram feitas a partir de 1828 individuos que responderam a um questionario eletronico disponibilizado em um portal de Saúde de grande acesso. Paralelamente, 20 especialistas foram entrevistados para avaliar estrategias de controle de qualidade das informacoes de Saúde veiculadas na rede. Resultados: Verificou-se o predominio de usuarios do sexo feminino que buscam informacoes para propria Saúde (≈ 90%), que consideram a internet uma de suas principais fontes de informacao em Saúde (86%) e passam de 5 a 35 horas na web por semana (62%). Atribui-se alta confianca as informacoes vindas de especialistas (76%) e baixa confianca na televisao, radio ou blogs (14%). Conclusoes: Conclui-se que a internet tem se mostrado uma fonte de informacao em Saúde de grande relevancia para populacao e que a certificacao de sites e uma estrategia a ser considerada, na perspectiva de melhoria da qualidade das informacoes e promocao da Saúde publica / Background: The Internet is the main source of health information for 70% of American adults. Until 2001, researches also showed that approximately 52 million Americans had already consulted the internet for medical information. In this sense, become important researches or specific interventions to better understand the use of internet for health: the benefits, risks and existing standards. Objectives: The aim of this work is to advance the understanding of user profile and their trends search for health information online. Methods: 1828 individuals were analyzed and responded to an electronic form available in a large health portal access. In addition, 20 experts were interviewed to evaluate strategies to control quality of health information transmitted on the web. Results: There was a predominance of female users who seek information for their own health (90%), who consider the internet one of their main sources of health information (86%) and spend 5-35 hours per week in the web (62%). The sample assigned high confidence to information of experts (76%) and low confidence in television, radio or blogs (14%). Conclusions: It is concluded that the internet has proved a source of health information of great relevance to population and that the certification of sites is a strategy to be considered with a view to improving the quality of information and promoting public health.
