Background Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease affecting many people around the world. Diabetes mellitus is divided into two types; type-1 and type-2. People with Diabetes Mellitus type 2 have a greater risk of complications as they age if they have an unhealthy lifestyle, such as smoking, obesity and malnutrition. Previous research has shown that patients do not always receive clear information about their diagnoses, how they can best manage their conditions, and what lifestyle changes they may need to make. The nurse's objective is to promote or maintain health, prevent ill-health and strengthen well-being. Aim The aim of this study has been to describe the care nurses can provide to patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. Method A descriptive literature study that identified 10 articles through the databases Medline via PubMed. These articles have been analyzed and thematized for this literature study. Results It showed that the nurse has an important role in supporting the patient to follow the treatment program prescribed by other caregivers, eg by a doctor or dietician. The nurse experienced that they promoted health of patients in different ways. The results have been compiled under one main heading, Stimulate for better health and four sub-headings; Motivate for better nutrition, Motivate for increased physical activity, Diabetes education - support and inform and Support for self-care. Conclusion The nursing care that nurses can apply to patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 are to motivate to better diet, motivate to physical activity, stimulate to better health and provide diabetes information. In addition, the nurse should regularly review the information patients receive to ensure it is appropriate. Continuous education and training in counseling for the nurse, would improve the motivational work that is part of the nursing care of diabetes mellitus type-2. / Bakgrund Diabetes mellitus är en kronisk sjukdom som drabbar många personer runt om i världen. Diabetes mellitus delas in i två typer; typ-1 och typ-2. Diabetes mellitus typ-2 har större risk att utveckla komplikationer då dessa ökar vid dåliga levnadsvanor, rökning, övervikt och dålig nutrition. Tidigare forskning har visat att patienter inte alltid får tydlig information om sin diagnos. T ex hur den skall hanteras och vilka livsstilsförändringar som behöver göras. Sjuksköterskans omvårdnadsåtgärder är att främja eller bibehålla hälsa, förebygga ohälsa och stärka välbefinnandet. Syfte Syftet med denna studie har varit beskriva sjuksköterskans omvårdnadsåtgärder vid diabetes mellitus typ 2. Metod En beskrivande litteraturstudie som har identifierat 10 artiklar genom databasen Medline via PubMed. Dessa artiklar har analyserats och tematiserats till denna litteraturstudie. Resultat Det visade att sjuksköterskan har en viktig roll att stödja patienten till att följa behandlingsprogrammet som är ordinerat av andra vårdgivare, t ex av läkare eller dietist. Sjuksköterskan upplevde att de utförde omvårdnadsåtgärder som främjar hälsan hos patienterna på olika sätt. Resultatet har sammanställts under en huvudrubrik, Stimulera till bättre hälsa och fyra underrubriker; Motivera till bättre kost, Motivera till ökad fysisk aktivitet, Diabetesutbildning - stödja och informera och Stöd till egenvård. Slutsats Sjuksköterskans omvårdnadsåtgärder vid diabetes mellitus typ 2 är att motivera till bättre kost, motivera till fysisk aktivitet, stimulera till bättre hälsa och ge diabetesinformation. Dessutom skall sjuksköterskan stödja och granska den information som patienterna får av andra vårdgivare. Fortbildning och träning inom rådgivningsteknik, skulle förbättra motivationsarbetet som ingår i sjuksköterskans omvårdnad av diabetes mellitus typ-2.
