Vårdgivares kommunikation med föräldrar vars barn vårdas på sjukhus : En litteraturöversikt

Introduction: When a child needs hospital care the parents can feel stress and anxiety. The parent’s feelings can have an effect on the child’s wellbeing and therefore the healthcare staff and the parents should work in a team for the child's good health. This is why communication between the healthcare staff and the parents is an important factor in order to create conditions for good healthcare for the child. Aim: To examine parents' positive and negative experiences of communication with healthcare staff when the child is hospitalized. Method: A general literature review study with a descriptive design. The study has a qualitative approach. The searches in PubMed and Cinahl gave a wide range of articles and the selection of articles was made through inclusion- and exclusion criterias. The 10 articles were analyzed through Friberg’s model of analysis through five steps. Result: Two head categories were created with three categories each and associated subcategories. One head category describes good communication and the other head category describes inadequate communication. Under the head category Good communication there are three categories: To be there, to give information and good reception. Their subcategories are Supporting, Talking about things besides sickness, Listening and being patient, Straight, clear and individualized information, Empathy, kindness and a calm approach, Involving parents, Non verbal communication and tone mode, and Transparency. Under the head category Inadequate communication there are three categories which are Unsatisfactory informing, Inexplicit communication and Limited participation. The subcategories became Lack of information, Too much information without preparation, Unclear communication between both health personnel and health personnel-parents, Use of medical language and Participation and reception. Conclusion: To make parents involved in the care for their child, to inform them clearly and individually, treat the parents with empathy and to take their questions and worries seriously are the types of communication that parents often appreciate. Inadequate communication was often the lack of the parts that parents wished were included in good communication. Keywords: Communication, parent experiences, hospitalized children, family-focused nursing.
