Les représentations de la France et des autres pays francophones : Les cultures dans le manuel scolaire FLE: le cas d'Escalade 1 et 2 / Representations of France and other French-speaking countries : Cultures in the FLE textbook: the case of Escalade 1 and 2

The purpose of the following study is to determine and investigate how two textbooks within FLE (French as foreign language) represent and shape cultural connotations through the pictures and the names of characters. This is conducted by analyzing cultural representations regarding France and other French-speaking countries. This study is drawn upon the Fairclough’s three-dimensional analysis model. The results of the study identified that there is a strong order of cultural representation for the characters that are included in the French category. Furthermore, these characters are portrayed as more competent and in more prosperous contexts than the one included in the category for the other French-speaking countries. The study also discusses stereotypical connotations that may arise through the images and names of the characters in the texts based on the content of the texts.
