Bidrar läroböckernas grammatiska övningar till att utveckla kommunikativ kompetens? : En innehållsanalys av läroböcker i franska för steg 3 och 4

An important part of becoming a teacher is to have good knowledge of the educational objectives set by the Swedish National Agency for Education. The objectives are clearly expressed, however, how to reach them is not mentioned. This leads to different interpretations and uncertainty for many teachers about the best way of teaching grammar and whether textbooks are useful for this purpose. This study aims at exploring whether high school grammar exercises in French as a foreign language could be considered to be in accordance with the stipulated goal of the Swedish National Agency for Education.Four text- and exercise books in French used during two different Curriculums for the upper secondary school and covering a period of 10 years, are analyzed. The purpose of analyzing the exercises in the textbooks is to find out whether they offer communication focused grammar exercises and if these exercises offers opportunities to develop communicative abilities. Furthermore, we also examine potential changes between the different versions of the text -and exercise books, published with an interval of ten years. The results through a mixed methodology approach, using both a quantitative and a qualitative method, showed in particular that the examined books have a large number of grammar and oral exercises. Communication could therefore be considered as reinforced. The exercises offered in the examined books show that they as a general are in accordance with the stipulated goals of the Swedish National Agency for Education.
