Previous issue date: 2014 / No contexto contemporâneo, o crescimento da obesidade, na maioria dos países e especialmente nos grupos socialmente vulneráveis, revela a natureza complexa das mudanças e transformações do padrão alimentar, envolvendo aspectos socioeconômicos e culturais. Neste cenário, ainda são tímidos os avanços nas políticas e ações de intervenção no problema. Em geral, as iniciativas voltadas à redução da obesidade tendem a focalizar mudanças no comportamento alimentar individual e estratégias setoriais subestimando os aspectos mais amplos ligados às iniquidades sociais, dinâmica simbólica e cultural e à diversidade das situações locais. Frente a essa realidade o objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o fenômeno da obesidade em contextos marcados pela pobreza, incorporando a perspectiva construtivista para compreender de que forma o excesso de peso é vivenciado por esses grupos sociais. Foram realizadas vinte e quatro entrevistas em profundidade e três grupos focais com famílias cadastradas em unidades da Estratégia de Saúde da Família e beneficiárias do programa governamental Bolsa Família. Na metodologia foram utilizados: levantamento documental, pesquisa bibliográfica e estudo de caso exploratório sobre a experiência das famílias residentes da região do alto Vale do Jequitinhonha, em Minas Gerais, Brasil. A expectativa foi analisar as percepções, interpretações e práticas em torno da alimentação e do corpo obeso. Os resultados revelaram componentes fundamentais a serem observados no desenho de políticas públicas voltadas à redução da obesidade.Nesta direção, ações direcionadas à promoção da equidade social e da igualdade de gênero, assim como à ampliação do acesso à alimentação,educação, tecnologia e serviços de saúde de qualidade, sobretudo no período do pós-parto nos parecem caminhos mais promissores para o enfrentamento da problemática da obesidade neste contexto local. / Currently, the growth of obesity in most countries and especially and socially vulnerable groups, reveals the complex nature of the changes and transformations of the feeding pattern involving socioeconomic and cultural aspects. In this scenario which there has been slow progress in policies and actions of intervention to this issue. In general, the initiatives aimed at reducing obesity tend to focus on changes in eating behavior and individual sector strategies .They under estimate broader aspects related to social inequities, symbolic dynamics and cultural diversity coming from local situations. Facingthe reality, the objective of this study was to investigate the phenomenon of obesity in context marked by poverty incorporating the constructivist perspective in order to acknowledge how being overweight is experienced by individuals, families and social groups. Twenty-four in-depth interviews were made in three focus groups with families who were enrolled in units of the Family Health Strategy and beneficiaries of government program called Bolsa Família. The methodology which were used: a documentary survey, literature and exploratory case study on the experience of households in the region Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The expectation was to analyze the perceptions, interpretations and practices around food and body fat. The results revealed fundamental components to be observed in the design of public policies aimed at reducing obesity. Focusing in this direction, actions which hasbeen directed towards promoting social equity and gender equality as well asincreased access to food, education, technology and health care quality, especially in the period after childbirth, seem most promising ways to cope the problem of obesity in this local context.
