Resultaten i matematik sjunker och en läromedelsstyrd utbildning dominerar den svenska matematikundervisningen. Undersökningar visar att kommunikations- och resonemangsförmågorna kan begränsas genom en läromedelstyrd undervisning så syftet med denna studie är att analysera i vilken utsträckning Favorit matematik och lärarhandledningen möjliggör för elever att utveckla dessa förmågor. Genom en läromedelsanalys, med lärarintervjuer och klassrumsobservationer som komplement, undersöks hur läromedel och lärarhandledningen möjliggör undervisning som utvecklar kommunikations- och resonemangsförmågorna, liksom hur lärare kan använda sig av läromedlet och lärarhandledningen. Kommunikationsförmågan analyseras utifrån representationsformer och resonemangsförmågan analyseras utifrån huruvida läromedlet och lärarhandledningen möjliggör för elever att föra och följa resonemang, samt om dessa möjliggör för elever att föra imitativa eller kreativa resonemang. Resultatet visar att läromedlet möjliggör för utveckling av kommunikationsförmågan i begränsad utsträckning, då användning av representationsformer varierar och vissa representationer får liten plats i läromedlet. Läromedlet erbjuder ingen möjlighet att följa resonemang, dock finns det uppgifter där elever får föra resonemang och av dessa var det imitativa resonemang som dominerade. Beroende på hur lärare väljer att använda lärarhandledningen påverkas elevers utvecklande av kommunikations- och resonemangsförmågorna. Blanda annat får elever chans att möta flera representationsformer, följa resonemang och utveckla kreativa resonemang om läraren väljer att utgå från den arbetsgång som presenteras i lärarhandledningen. / The results in mathematics are decreasing and learning material-based teaching is dominating the Swedish mathematic education. Studies show that communication and reasoning abilities could be limited through teaching that is guided by learning materials. The purpose of this study is to analyze the extent to which the learning material Favorit matematik and its teacher’s guide enable students to develop these abilities. Through an analysis of learning materials, with teacher interviews and classroom observations as a supplement, this study investigates how learning materials and the teacher´s guide enable teaching that develops communication and reasoning skills, as well as how teachers can use them successfully. The communication ability is analyzed based on forms of representation and the reasoning ability is analyzed based on whether the learning material gives the opportunity for students to lead and follow reasoning, and whether the learning material and teacher´s guide gives the opportunity for the students to lead imitative or creative reasoning. The result shows that the learning material limits development of the communication ability. The use of representations varies and some representations are given less space in the learning material. The learning material does not offer an opportunity to follow reasoning, however, there are tasks where the students are allowed to reason in which the imitative reasoning dominated. Depending on how teachers choose to use the teacher's guide, students' development of communication and reasoning skills are affected. Students get the chance to use more representations, follow reasoning and develop creative reasoning if the teacher chooses to use the lesson guide presented in the teacher's guide.
