Läsa är bra : läsa rätt är bättre: Diskurser om läsning i svensk dagspress 2007-2010 / Reading is good : A good read is even better: Discourses on reading in Swedish daily press 2007-2010

The aim of this Master’s thesis is to deepen the understandingof how discourses on reading are manifested in Swedishdaily press 2007-2010. The empirical material is based on76 articles from four national newspapers. The questionsasked are: what categorizations emerge on reading; whatpossible themes can be discerned; which discourses onreading appear in newspapers and how are these defined;and what consequences may the discourses have? The study examines how reading is described and how perceptionsand images of reading emerge and the factors affectingthis, through critical Discourse Analyse according toErnesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. The articles are analysedin four phases which includes: identifying the elementreading, reading categories by means of chains of equivalence, possible themes and identifying discourses. The resultsshow that four discourses on reading can be identified: theinstrumental discourse, the hierarchical discourse, the malecrisis discourse and the “invisible” female discourse.Possible consequences of the discourses are that institutions, such as schools, solely focus on the utilitarian aspect of readingand do not encourage the pleasurable reading. Readingis often associated with the reading of books. It could be ofimportance that professionals within the library and schoolsectors are aware of this when reading is discussed and promoted.Another conclusion is that reading associated withwomen is likely to be taken for granted, and as a result effortsare focused on enhancing reading among boys and menand thereby perpetuate gender stereotypes. / Program: Bibliotekarie
