The aim of this study was to describe and analyze how elderly care staff in two municipalities, one bigger and one smaller, works to notice mental illness amongst elders, as well as how to relate loneliness to mental illness. Apart from that- we also want to describe how the elderly care staff work to provide solidarity and psychological wellbeing among the elderly. Through previous research we have found out that mental illness is a comprehensive problem amongst elders. Yet there is a big lack of research. In order to achieve the aim of the study we used seven semi structured interviews which is based on qualitative methods. Apart from that we used theoretical perspectives like KASAM, identity and loneliness to analyze the results. The results of this study show that existential and relational loneliness is one of the main causes of mental illness. Also, lost identity and reduced community are fundamental factors to mental illness. At last, the study shows that more knowledge and therefore more resources are needed for the staff to provide psychological wellbeing among the elderly.
