Previous issue date: 2004 / Resumo: A expansão da maxila é um procedimento que objetiva o aumento do arco dental maxilar para correção de desvios oclusais. Empregada em crianças, há controvérsias sobre sua eficácia em adultos, quando o crescimento crânio-facial já atingiu sua maturidade óssea. O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar modificações cefalométricas decorrentes da expansão da maxila em pacientes adultos, observando as seguintes medidas lineares: largura facial, largura nasal, altura nasal, largura maxilar, largura mandibular e largura molar-maxilar. A amostra constituiu-se de 24 telerradiografias frontais, obtidas antes e após o período necessário para a expansão da maxila, de 12 pacientes, ambos os sexos, com idade entre 18 anos e dois meses e 37 anos e oito meses. Todos os pacientes foram submetidos à expansão lenta dos ossos maxilares com o uso de aparelho removível, dentomucossuporado. Foi utilizado teste estatístico de Wincoxon pareado, para amostras relacionadas e nível de significância 5%. Ocorreu aumento médio de 1.92 mm na largura nasal e altura nasal 2.5 mm. Nas medidas lineares, largura maxilar e largura mandibular, o aumento médio foi de 2.42 mm e 1.92 mm respectivamente. Para largura facial encontrou-se aumento médio de 1.41 mm e largura molar-maxilar 2.0 mm, sendo tais alterações estatisticamente significativas. Com base nos resultados obtidos conclui-se que houve aumento das medidas faciais, induzidas por expansão lenta da maxila em adultos / Abstract: The maxillary expansion is an procedure that aims the enlargement of the maxillary dental arch for corrections of occlusal deviations. Greatly utilized in children, there are quarrels concerning its efficacy in adults, when the facial-cranium development already reached its bone maturity. The present study has the objective of evaluating cephalometric modifications originated from the maxillary expansion in adult patients, observing the following linear measurements: facial breadth, maxillary breadth, nasal breadth, mandibular breadth, molar-maxillary breadth and nasal height. The sample constituted of 24 frontal teleradiographies taken before and immediately after the expansions obtained in 12 patients, male and female, with age between 18 years and two months and 37 years and eight months. All of the patients were submitted to slow expansion of the maxillary bones with the use of removable and dentmucosupport appliance. The coupled statistical test of Wincoxon was utilized for related samples and 5% significance level. A medial increase of 1.92 mm occurred on the nasal breadth and 2.5mm on the nasal height. The medial increase on the maxillary breadth and mandibular breadth linear measurements was 2.42 mm and 1.92 mm, respectively. There was a medial increase of 1.41 mm on the facial breadth and 2.00 mm on the molar-maxillary breadth, considering that such alterations were statistically significant.
