<p>Många äldre behöver idag hjälp med sin munhygien, då de ofta har eller riskerar att drabbas av flertalet konsekvenser som en bristfällig munvård och hygien orsakar. Syftet med studien var att beskriva sjuksköterskans betydelse för upprätthållande av god oral hälsa hos äldre. Metoden som användes var en litteraturstudie. Resultatet visade att det finns stora brister i hur munvården utförs, samt på viket sätt som sjuksköterskan kan förebygga flertalet munrelaterade problem genom preventivt arbete. Många gånger kan sjukvårdspersonal negligera behovet av en god munvård. Orsakerna till detta är bland annat brist på tid, personal och resurser. I diskussionen diskuteras konsekvenser av en bristande munvård och vilken roll sjuksköterskan har genom att vara en nyckelperson i omvårdnaden av äldre. I konklusionen tas konsekvenserna av en bristfällig munvård upp vilka är mycket allvarliga, och många gånger livshotande, om problemen inte upptäcks i tid.</p> / <p>Many elderly people need a lot of help with their oral care. Otherwise there is a risk that they will be suffering from several consequences like a lack of oral care and hygiene causes. The purpose of this study was to describe the nurse’s sense for maintaining a good oral health among elderly. The method was a literature study. The result showed that there are big lacks around how the oral care is provided, thus different ways of how the nurse can prevent problems related to the oral cavity, through preventive work. Many nurses and hospital persons neglect the needs for oral care, the reasons for this is among other things lack of time, lack of personnel and lack of resources. In the discussion argues consequences the lack of oral care and the nurses roll, with being a key person in the care among elderly. In the conclusion discusses the consequences of an inadequate oral care, witch can be very serious, and many times life threatening, if the problems not explores in time.</p>
