Previous issue date: 2015-01-16 / This doctoral thesis aims to show that intentional attention is a pre-experiential element
necessary to perceptual cognitive act. Peter John Olivi (1248 / 9-1298) supports the idea that
intentional attention must be used as the condition for the active performance of perceptual
cognitive act. Describing the type of access that the mind has of external objects is a principle
of perceptual cognition theory. The hypothesis presented uses the theory of matter, the theory
of soul and the theory of soul s potencies as a base for the theory of intentional attention. So,
this work presents how Olivi elaborates a peculiar theory of matter and distinguishes corporal
of spiritual matters (Chapter 1). Thus, especially in cognizant human beings, this distinction
requires some explanation about the connection between spiritual matter and corporal matter.
The theory of the human soul (Chapter 2) explains the union between body and mind and
between the soul s potencies. In fact, Olivi s solution depends on the acceptance of a theory
where the formal parts of the soul are linked under a principle of subordination and continuity
(Chapter 3). Besides that, the necessity of intentional attention at the moment of the power
orientation for this or that object is noticed in the performance of sensorial soul s potencies.
However, this attention is a characteristic of mode of common sense action applied in the acts
of the external senses. Therefore, the theoretical elements that are presupposed systematically
for the treatment of intentional attention are given. The connection between attention and
intentionality is the subject of the last and decisive chapter (Chapter 4). The intentionality is a
natural component of sensory apprehension, but in Olivi it requires an active nature of the
soul, since the intentional performance is essential to the soul and it is independent of
intermediate representational elements such as species. Olivi does not reduce the cognitive act
to active or passive mode of action, but adds the terminative cause as a function of object in
the act of production. Then, the termination is crucial to show how cognitive attention is
classified as intentional. Finally, the intentional attention as the condition which ensures
immediate access to the external world objects is presented. / A presente tese de doutorado tem por finalidade mostrar que a aten??o intencional ? um
elemento pr?-experiencial necess?rio ao ato cognitivo perceptual. Pedro de Jo?o Olivi
(1247/8-1298) sustenta que a aten??o intencional tem de ser posta como a condi??o para o
desempenho ativo do ato cognitivo perceptual. Um dos t?picos da teoria da cogni??o
perceptual ? descrever o tipo de acesso que a mente tem aos objetos exteriores. A hip?tese
apresentada no presente trabalho depende da teoria da mat?ria, da teoria da alma, da teoria das
pot?ncias an?micas como pressupostos para a teoria da aten??o intencional. Sendo assim,
apresenta-se como Olivi elabora uma teoria da mat?ria peculiar e distingue a mat?ria corporal
da espiritual (Cap?tulo 1). Destarte, principalmente, em entes cognoscentes humanos, essa
distin??o exige alguma explica??o da conex?o entre a mat?ria espiritual e a mat?ria corporal.
Com o detalhamento da teoria da alma humana (Cap?tulo 2), explicita-se a coliga??o entre
corpo e mente e tamb?m entre as pot?ncias an?micas. De fato, a solu??o de Olivi depende da
admiss?o de uma teoria da alma em que as partes formais est?o coligadas sob um princ?pio de
subordina??o e de continuidade (Cap?tulo 3). Al?m disso, em Olivi, no desempenho das
pot?ncias an?micas sens?rias ? que se nota a necessidade da aten??o intencional quando da
orienta??o da pot?ncia para um ou outro objeto. Mas essa aten??o ? pr?pria do modo de a??o
do sentido comum aplicada aos atos dos sentidos exteriores. Assim, est?o dados os elementos
te?ricos sistematicamente pressupostos para o tratamento da aten??o intencional. A conex?o
entre aten??o e intencionalidade ? tema do ?ltimo e fundamental cap?tulo (Cap?tulo 4) deste
trabalho. A intencionalidade ? um componente natural da apreens?o sensorial, mas em Olivi
ela exige que a alma tenha uma natureza ativa, pois o desempenho intencional ? prec?puo ?
alma e ? independente de elementos representacionais intermedi?rios como as species. Olivi
n?o reduz o ato cognitivo ao modo de a??o ativo ou passivo, mas adiciona a causa terminativa
como uma fun??o do objeto na produ??o do ato. A termina??o, ent?o, ? crucial para mostrar
como a aten??o cognitiva ? classificada como intencional. Por fim, apresenta-se a aten??o
intencional como a condi??o que garante o acesso imediato aos objetos do mundo exterior.
