Ethique et personne : la volonté et le choix du mal dans la pensée de Pierre de Jean Olivi (1248-1298) / Ethic and Person : will and Choice of Evil in the Thought of Peter of John Olivi (1248-1298)

Bobillier, Stève 17 January 2017 (has links)
With the question of akrasia as a central thread, this thesis tries to outline the ethics of Peter of John Olivi (1248-1298). More specifically, the objective is to understand the solutions the Franciscans consider to describe what motivates the human being to sometimes act in an evil way and this on the assumption of total liberty and of the knowledge of reasons. After definition of the role of the will as well as it’s connection with the intellect in freedom and having specified the diverse significations of consciousness in the work of Olivi, this thesis demonstrates that the notion of person suggested by Olivi, considering the different juridical and theological occurrences, which are applied at his epoch, is essential in view of the question of the deliberate choice of the evil. Finally, after having determined if an ethical norm exists in the human being, especially through the notion of spiritual taste, we want to show that the will of power on the others as well as the pride are, from the perspective of Olivi, the source of all sins. We conclude this thesis by the analysis of the reasons of the fall of the demons, primarily Lucifer, to illustrate the entirety of our aim.

Peter John Olivi (1248 / 9-1298) supports the idea that intentional attention must be used as the condition for the active performance of perceptual cognitive act. Describing the type of access that the mind has of external objects is a principle of perceptual cognition theory. The hypothesis presented uses the theory of matter, the theory of soul and the theory of soul’s potencies as a base for the theory of intentional attention. So, this work presents how Olivi elaborates a peculiar theory of matter and distinguishes corporal of spiritual matters (Chapter 1). Thus, especially in cognizant human beings, this distinction requires some explanation about the connection between spiritual matter and corporal matter. The theory of the human soul (Chapter 2) explains the union between body and mind and between the soul’s potencies. In fact, Olivi’s solution depends on the acceptance of a theory where the formal parts of the soul are linked under a principle of subordination and continuity (Chapter 3).Besides that, the necessity of intentional attention at the moment of the power orientation for this or that object is noticed in the performance of sensorial soul’s potencies. However, this attention is a characteristic of mode of common sense action applied in the acts of the external senses. Therefore, the theoretical elements that are presupposed systematically for the treatment of intentional attention are given. The connection between attention and intentionality is the subject of the last and decisive chapter (Chapter 4). The intentionality is a natural component of sensory apprehension, but in Olivi it requires an active nature of the soul, since the intentional performance is essential to the soul and it is independent of intermediate representational elements such as species. Olivi does not reduce the cognitive act to active or passive mode of action, but adds the terminative cause as a function of object in the act of production. Then, the termination is crucial to show how cognitive attention is classified as intentional. Finally, the intentional attention as the condition which ensures immediate access to the external world objects is presented.

A Lectura super Mattheum de Pedro de João Olivi (ca.1248-1298): a study on the interpretation of the Gospel according to Matthew chapter 16, and its implications for the theory of plenitudo potestatis papalis

Lima, Marinalva Silveira 02 August 2011 (has links)
The goal masters dissertation is the analysis of Franciscan Peter John Olivis biblical comment named Lectura super Matthaeum (comment under Matthew), chapter 16. We propose to understand the method of interpretation and analysis adopted by Olivi, as well as his themes, like his perspectives about the Church of Rome, his criticism about the Franciscan Order, and the absolute papal governments doctrine. For, we search to identify if that doctrine appears and how it happens in our main source of study, and to show by which means his ideas contributed to put in check the ecclesiastical structure. We propose, also, to verify by which manner the thesis developed by Olivi conducted to a real need of reformulation of the plenitudo potestatis papalis.

Dante and the Friars Minor: Aesthetics of the Apocalypse

Bolognesi, Davide January 2012 (has links)
This is an interdisciplinary study that aims to reassess Dante's use of Franciscan sources in the Divine Comedy. Particularly, I focus on two important, yet marginalized, theologians: the Provençal friar Pietro di Giovanni Olivi, and his disciple, Ubertino da Casale. Both are coeval of Dante Alighieri, and served as lectores in Florence. In particular, I examine the eschatological aspects of their works, in an attempt to understand how they contribute to Dante's own eschatological vision. Ubertino and Olivi were extremely interested in understanding history through the dense symbolism of the Apocalypse. Therefore, I inspected their works, particularly Olivi's Lectura Super Apocalipsim (a commentary on the Apocalypse written in 1298, of which there exist no modern editions), and Ubertino's Arbor Vitae Crucifixae Jesu, "The Tree of the Crucified Life of Jesus," a massive work on the life of Christ, composed in 1305, in which the author incorporates and develops large parts of Olivi's commentary. I attempt to disentangle the crossed references that link these two books with Dante's Divine Comedy. I aim to revise our knowledge of Dante's appropriation of these sources, for I believe that scholars have unjustly dismissed Ubertino as an unoriginal mediator, on the ground of his ideological dependence on Olivi. Therefore I propose an amendment in Ubertino's favor. Upon a redefinition of Dante's ideological genealogy, I hope to improve our comprehension of how Dante incorporates the eschatology debate of his time in the sacred poem.
