Språkutveckling för andraspråkselever i SO-undervisningen / Language development for second language students in social science education

Language development is a central part for students to be given the opportunity for equivalent education. For Swedish schools in Sweden, the ethnic diversity has increased. This results in students with different linguistic abilities, which means that teachers face the challenge of adapting the teaching. The purpose of the study is to, based on documented research, map and discuss the meaning of working with language development for second language students as well as further working methods for how teachers in their social science teaching can work with language development for second language students. The questions are; What does it mean to work on language development for second language students in social science education? And, how can teachers work on language development in social science education with second language students? The method of this study is to systematically review previous research and summarize effective adaptation methods. We have used the databases ERIC, SwePub, Google Scholar and Libsearch. The studies that have been investigated show that language development and social science contributes to promoting the language where the goal is to support the students to understand the subject language, in order to then be able to use and communicate. Furthermore, it is highlighted that the relationship between the teacher is central and that the teacher needs to have an understanding of the subject and the linguistic requirements that are set in order to adapt social science education to work more language development. These tools can be exercises, drawings, reading comprehension and discussions where students can share culture, experiences and more that can develop the language development of second language students in social sciences.
