Previous issue date: 1995 / Resumo: Os hospitais psiquiátricos públicos caminham lentamente para a extinção, quer pela transferência de seus pacientes para hospitais particulares, quer pelo esgotamento desse modelo de intervenção, quer ainda pelo surgimento de uma série de outros dispositivos assistenciais e sociais. O Asilo de Alienados do Juqueri - por ter sido o primeiro no Estado de São Paulo e, no seu período áureo, o maior complexo hospitalar do Brasil foi um marco fundamental no modelo que tinha o manicômio como principal instrumento terapêutico. O hospital determinou profundamenteo destino e o crescimento do pequeno vilarejo onde foi instalado e que hoje se con.stitui no município de Franco da Rocha. Além de ter sido a principal instituição empregadora da cidade até a década de 70, ele também marcou as relações políticas econômicas e administrativas e a organização social do município que cresceu ao seu redor. Hoje, o Juqueri está decadente e esquecido. Seus 2.000 pacientes crônicos aguardam silenciosamenteo próprio
fim junto com o do hospital, que não recebe pacientes novos. A cidade, por outro lado, cresceu e se transformou numa cidade-dormitório que tem, na capital e no trem, seu principal motor. Este trabalho discute a influência do Juqueri na constituiçãodeste município e sua importância,ao longo de
um século, não só no crescimento da cidade, mas também na determinação das citadas relações, dos aspectos culturais e de uma identidade daqueles moradores em torno do asilo e da loucura. Discute também a possível influência do Juqueri na geração de demanda psiquiátrica devido ao convívio próximo e simbiótico entre cidade e hospital. Para isso, estudamos a formação histórica do município, procurando detectar. a influência do asilo nesse "'I' processo. Procuramos, ainda, através de entrevistas e do estudo das representações que delas emergem, verificar os aspectos subjetivos para a comunidade do convívio com o hospital, nos seus aspectos subjetivos. Frente à decadência do manicômio e à sua transformação e, paralelamente, ao crescimento da cidade e à perda de importância do Juqueri, pudemos verificar também o impacto do fim do asilo, o possível destino das suas ter as
e a transformação do modelo hospitalar para o ambulatorial com suas conseqüências para a comunidade. Realizamos, por fim, um estudo comparativo da demanda psiquiátrica que recorre aos serviços extrahospitalares, buscando verificar o peso do asilo na constituição dessa demanda / Abstract: public psychiatric hospitaIs are going slowly into extinction, either due to the removaI of patienes to private hospitaIs or because that model of intervention is exhausted, and also due to the appearence of a series of other assistance and social devices. The Asylum of Insanes - Juqueri, was the first in the state of São Paulo and during its golden period, the largest hospital complex in Brazil. It was a fundamental landmark in the model that had the mental hospital as it main therapeutic instrument. The hospital had determined deeply the destiny and the increase of the little village where it was installed, which is nowadays the town of Franco da Rocha. Besides being the major employing institution of the town till the
seventies, the hospital also set ~p the political, economical and administrative relations, and the social organization af the town that grew around it.
Today Juqueri is decadent and forgotten. The 2.000 chronic patients are waiting silently their own end together with the hospitaIs', that nowadays doesn't receive new patients. On the other hand, the town grew and changed to a "dormi tory ci ty" (1 ) , which has in the capital and in the
train its principal motor. (1) Poor neighbourhood where labours live, while, working in bigger and surrounding cities. This study discusses Juqueri's influence in the implementation of the town of Franco da Rocha, and its importance throughout a whole century not only in the growing
of the town, but also in the determination of the already mentioned relations, of the cultural aspects and a identity of the inhabitants surrounding the asylum and the madness. The study also discusses the possible influence of Juqueri in the generation of a psychiatric demand due to the close and
simbiotic relations between town and hospital. The historical background of the town has been studied, trying to reveal the hospital's influence in that
processo The subjective aspects for the communi ty of the familiarity with the hospital was verified through interviews and the study of representations that emerged from them. Facing the hospital decadence and its transformations parallel to the growing of the town and the lack of Juqueri's importance, we examined the impact of the end of the hospital, the possible destiny of its land and the transformation of the hospital model to out-patien clinics and the consequences to the community.
