Previous issue date: 2012-01-10 / Advances in neuroscience have allowed us a more refined study of language processing, and hemispheric specialization. In relation to text processing, previous research has indicated a greater involvement of the left hemisphere (LH), associated with text integration, which means, the understanding of macrostructure, and the creation of an appropriate situational model to the text; whereas other studies focus on a more effective engagement of the right hemisphere (RH) in this processing. Considering the understanding of the microstructure, it seems to be consensual that the LH is largely responsible for it. This research aims to determine how right hemisphere brain-damaged (RHBD) participants process narrative texts in the three levels of comprehension: micro, macro and situational model. We bring the following questions: how do individuals with RHBD process a narrative text? Is there any difference between these individuals and the control group concerning the reading comprehension of micro, macro and mental model of a narrative? Is there any relation between a good performance in tasks of memory and executive functions and higher accuracy in narrative comprehension? We are searching for answers to these questions through the implementation of this study. A control group, two comparative lesion participants, and a RHBD case individual participated in the study. These participants underwent a neuropsychological evaluation, followed by linguistics tests. The results support the view that the RH has a special participation in the understanding of the macrostructure and the situational model of the texts. This research provided data to extend our understanding of the language pathology functioning, its relation to the cerebral hemispheres, as well as their interrelationship with other cognitive processes of working, episodic memory, and executive functions. / Os avan?os das Neuroci?ncias permitiram um estudo mais refinado sobre o processamento da linguagem e a especializa??o hemisf?rica. Em rela??o ao processamento de texto, algumas pesquisas indicam uma maior participa??o do hemisf?rio esquerdo (HE), no que tange ? integra??o textual, isto ?, na compreens?o da macroestrutura e cria??o de um modelo situacional adequado ao texto; enquanto que outras apontam para uma participa??o mais efetiva do hemisf?rio direito (HD) nessas fun??es. Quanto ? compreens?o da microestrutura parece haver um consenso de que o HE ? o maior respons?vel. O objetivo desta pesquisa ? averiguar como textos s?o processados por portadores de les?o no HD, considerando-se a participa??o das regi?es hemisf?ricas no processamento dos tr?s n?veis de compreens?o das narrativas: micro-, macroestrutura e modelo situacional. Trazemos os seguintes questionamentos: como o texto narrativo ? processado por indiv?duos com les?o cerebral no HD? H? diferen?as de desempenho entre esses indiv?duos e os neurologicamente saud?veis quanto ? compreens?o leitora da micro, macroestrutura e modelo mental da narrativa? Que rela??es podem ser estabelecidas entre o desempenho dos participantes na compreens?o dos tr?s n?veis de processamento e o desempenho em tarefas de mem?ria e fun??es executivas? As respostas a esses questionamentos foram buscadas pela implementa??o de um estudo, do qual participou um grupo controle sem les?o cerebral; dois participantes comparativos e um participante caso os tr?s com les?o cerebral no HD decorrente de acidente vascular encef?lico - AVE. Os participantes da pesquisa foram submetidos a uma avalia??o neuropsicol?gica, seguida de testes lingu?sticos. Os resultados encontrados corroboram a vis?o de que o HD tem especial participa??o na compreens?o da macroestrutura e do modelo situacional dos textos. A pesquisa oferece dados que ampliam nossa compreens?o sobre o funcionamento da linguagem na patologia, sua rela??o com os hemisf?rios cerebrais, bem como sua inter-rela??o com outros processos cognitivos da mem?ria de trabalho, epis?dica e das fun??es executivas.
