ABSTRACT Background: Research shows that adoptive parents are concerned that health professionals does not have enough knowledge about adoptive children and attachment. Research also shows that the preventive work in Sweden regarding support in children's health care is inadequate for adoptive children. This might be considered alarming since inadequate support from the children's health care can lead to poorer health development. Adoptive parents’ experiences in health care and the support they give are therefore important and could contribute with knowledge and enable an improvement of the health care for adoptive children. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate how adoptive parents experienced the support from children's health care and how the support could be improved. Method: The study was conducted according to a descriptive qualitative method with an inductive approach and nine adoptive parents were interviewed. Results: During the interviews, it emerged that the adoptive parents experienced that the general support from the children health care centers were lacking. However, the parents felt that the treatment of the specialist nurses were good. Insufficient understanding and knowledge about adoptive children at the children health care centers emerged during the interviews, and the majority of the parents experienced the support about the attachment as lacking. Hence, the parents felt that the support could be improved through enhancing the competence and the understanding for adoptive families. Conclusion: To sum up, there was a strong need for improvement of the support within the children's health care for adoptive children. Furthermore, further research is needed in this area to raise more experiences of the support from children's healthcare centers to adoptive parents.
