This research deals with the synthesis and structural characterization of some copper (II) coordination compounds containinig the amines 1,3-diaminopropane, 1,2-diaminoethane, triethylenediamine and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene and the anionic ligands chloro, azide, tiocianate, cianate, tetracyanopalladate(II) and 4,4’-oxybisbenzoate. Twelve new complexes were prepared, [Cu(NO3)2(pn)2]·[Cu(N3)(NO3)(pn)2], [Cu(SCN)(μ-SCN)(pn)]n, [Cu(N3)(μ-SCN)(pn)]2, [Cu2(N3)(NCO)(μ-N3)(μ-NCO)(pn)2], [Cu{Pd(CN)4}(pn)]n, [Cu{Pd(CN)4}(pn)2]n, [Cu{Pd(CN)4}(en)]n, [Cu2(Cl)2(μ-Cl)2(μ-ted)]n, [Cu2(μ-N3)4(μ-ted)]n, [Cu2(Cl)2(μ-Cl)2(μ-ted)(NH3)2]n, {[Cu2(Cl)2(μ-Cl)2(μ-ted)(nba)2]·(nba)}n and [Cu2(μ-obb)2(μ-bpe)]n, and their structures were proposed based on elemental analysis, infrared vibrational spectroscopy, electronic spectroscopy and, when possible, single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements. Besides these compounds, the known ones [Cu(SCN)2(pn)2] and [Cu{Pd(CN)4}(en)2]n were prepared in order to have their thermal behaviors studied and compared with the other compounds containing the same ligands. The analytical and spectroscopic data pointed to bi- and polynuclear structures, except for the cocrystal [Cu(NO3)2(pn)2]·[Cu(N3)(NO3)(pn)2], which presents two mononuclear independent units. The thermal behavior of the compounds was studied by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. Although we did not obtain stable intermediated compounds during the thermal decomposition of the complexes, the existence of the compound [Cu{Pd(CN)4}(pn)]n, which was prepared afterwards by wet way, was suggested based on the analysis of the TG curve of [Cu{Pd(CN)4}(pn)2]n. The complex [Cu2(Cl)2(μ-Cl)2(μ-ted)]n displayed a vapochromic behavior by altering its colour from orange to green when exposed to ammonia and n-butylamine vapours, being that the reaction products could be isolated and characterized.
