This study has its purpose in examining teachers' perception about digital tools and their competence development in using the tools in their teaching. The method for collecting data about this chosen subject has been by using both quantitative and qualitative methods in forms of surveys and interviews. The teachers in this study are all in elementary school. The main questions in this study have been formed in regards to how teachers view their competence in/about digital tools corresponds to which competence they consider themselves needed, and also which difficulties they see in using digital tools based on their digital competence. The results from the study have been analyzed based on the socio-cultural perspective. The main terms used in the analysis are tools, artefact and mediation in order to interpret the result. The result of the study shows that the majority of the teachers witness that they lack enough digital competence to use digital tools. Several teachers share that they constantly have to ask for help from other teachers. Many teachers also wish to gain more competence in digital tools so they can learn how to use them and also be able to handle any problems that might occur by themselves. Furthermore the results show that every teacher who participated in the study is positive about the use of digital tools in their teaching. Both when used in the classroom and as a planning tool. In conclusion the study shows that teachers wish to get more digital competence in order to more easily and in a more efficient way use digital tools in their teaching.
