Based on previous research my purpose with this study was to make visible how preschool teachers work to promote children´s early reading and writing skills. To highlight how they work and what methods they use, and how they support the children in their literacy development. To be able to answer the purpose, two questions were created: What activities do preschool teachers use to promote children´s reading and writing skills? And how do preschool teachers support children in their reading and writing development? The study is a quantitative study with survey as a method. The survey was sent to a medium-sized city in Sweden and a neighboring municipality. It was answered by 32 preschool teachers. The results of the survey show that the interviewed preschool teachers to a large extent work in line with what current research show to be most effective in promoting children´s literacy development. The results also show that preschool teachers use activities such as reading aloud, storytelling, book talks, language games and phonemic activities to stimulate and develop children´s literacy. In addition, they create scaffolding educational environments which are accessible and involve the children, to guide and help children into their zone of proximal development, and thus promote and develop children´s literacy.
