The purpose of this study is to illustrate how home care staff in Sweden experience the work with violence against elderly people in close relationships. In our earlier research, we can see that violence against elderly people in close relationships may be a public health problem as a result of the aging population. Research shows that there is an ignorance of violence against older people in close relationships and that this can be based on an ageism. Studies show that home care staff are an important factor in identifying domestic violence. Home care staff are in the elderly’s private home and may therefore discover the living conditions of the individual. The study is focusing on home care staff’s experience of addressing elderly victims of violence and experience of support from the organization. Through a qualitative method, we interviewed seven home care staff. The interviews were transcribed and coded for our results. The study has taken its theoretical point of departure in professional ethics as well as the home care staff’s discretion and ageism as a concept. Our study shows that it is important to have a common definition of violence for home care staff in order to address the problem and find appropriate action strategies. The result shows that violence has different meanings for our interviewees, which may affect the staff’s actions. It may therefore affect the support and efforts for the victims of violence. It is a sensitive problem for the staff to approach. Ethical dilemmas may also occur in relation to legislation. It appears that it is also important to have clear guidelines and knowledge for the staff to approach the issue.
