Homosexualitet ses fortfarande som en avvikelse i förhållande till den heterosexuella samhällsnormen och människor som definierar sig som homosexuella måste hantera en rad olika problem som heterosexuella människor inte behöver eftersom de är en del av normen. Med avstamp i George H. Meads identitetsteori och kompletterande stigmabegrepp från Erving Goffman ämnar studien undersöka hur den identitetsskapande processen kan se ut hos homosexuella kvinnor och vidare hur att vara lesbisk har påverkat deras självbild. Utifrån Michel Foucaults maktteori och definitionen av begreppet panoptikon undersöks upplevelsen av processen som det innebär att komma ut som homosexuell. Författaren närmar sig fenomenet genom kvalitativa intervjuer med människor som identifierar sig som kvinnor och som lesbiska. Studien visar att det att tillhöra en minoritet som hela tiden måste förhålla sig till en normativ majoritet har stor påverkan både när det gäller självbilden och identiteten hos lesbiska kvinnor / Homosexuality is still seen as a deviation in comparison to the heterosexual norm and people who define themselves as homosexual must deal with problems that heterosexual people never have to because they are part of a normative structure. Starting with George H. Meads identity theory and complementing theories from Erving Hoffman regarding the concept of stigma the study aims to research the process of identity development for lesbian women as a minority group and furthermore how being a lesbian influences their self image. With base in Michel Foucaults theories about power and surveillance and his use of the concept Panopticon the study aims to investigate the process of “coming out”. The writer of this paper analyses the different phenomenons through empiric data that is collected via qualitative interviews with women who identify themselves as lesbians. The study shows that being a part of a sexual minority group has a large impact on the self image and identity development for these lesbian women.
