Stereotypiska mönster i barnböcker : - / Stereotypical patterns in children's books : -

Books are a well-used learning tool in preschool and therefore it is important to make visible how children can be influenced by them both positively and negatively. In this essay I perform a qualitative analysis where the selection consists of five popular children's books that I compare using images and text in a discourse analysis. In the discourse analysis, I make an interpretation of the images and texts and what they convey from an intersectional and norm-critical perspective. As an adult, I then put myself in the perspective of children during the course of the analysis. I use the intersectional perspective to see power structures and inequalities that are made visible in the books. The intersectional perspective will also make visible different social categories and identity categories. I myself have chosen in my analysis to stick to the categories of gender, ethnicity and religion. With the help of the intersectional perspective, I also get a view of power systems and how these work together in different contexts. Based on them, I can then see exclusions and inclusions in, for example, the category of ethnicity. With the help of the representations of the categories based on image and text, I will be able to see stereotypical patterns in books as well as discriminatory factors. I will use the norm-critical perspective in the analysis as I will make visible norms that appear in the books and interpret how these can affect the children's identity formation positively and negatively. The aim is to make visible how these factors together with the categories are made visible in the books and how it can affect young children's self-image and identity formation. The conclusion chapter clarifies the results of the analysis.
