Previous issue date: 2010-03-05 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This paper explores the manifestations of popular culture in neighborhoods of Roger and also in the city of Joao Pessoa, in a period between 1900 and 1960 decades. The aim of this study was to understand the transformations occurring in the context of popular culture in the region, emphasizing the field of power relations that is located on the popular culture of the hegemonic culture. During the twentieth century, many changes occurred in the city of Joao Pessoa, especially with regard to its urban setting, working conditions, housing and the broader cultural context. These changes, in turn, caused changes in the customs and cultural practices popular in the region comprising the districts of Roger and Tambiá. The aim of this study is to examine the customs and cultural practices popular in this transformation process. In this sense, my concern is with cultural processes and the experiences of its participants. Therefore, the memory of local residents is crucial to this research. It is this memory that guides us in the ways of popular culture as it is from there that we can take account of the meanings of culture. / O presente trabalho busca analisar as manifestações de cultura popular presentes nos bairros do Roger e Tambiá, na cidade de João Pessoa-PB, num período compreendido entre as décadas de 1900 e 1960. Pretende-se com este estudo compreender as transformações que se processaram no âmbito da cultura popular nessa região, enfatizando o terreno de relações de força que situa a cultura popular diante da cultura hegemônica. No decorrer do século XX, inúmeras transformações ocorreram na cidade de João Pessoa, sobretudo no que diz respeito a sua configuração urbana, às condições de trabalho, de moradia e ao contexto cultural mais amplo. Estas mudanças, por sua vez, ocasionaram transformações nos costumes e práticas culturais populares na região que compreende os bairros do Roger e Tambiá. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar os costumes e práticas culturais populares dentro deste processo de transformação. Neste sentido, minha preocupação é com os processos culturais e com as experiências de seus participantes. Por isso, a memória dos moradores da região é fundamental para essa pesquisa. É essa memória que nos guia pelos caminhos da cultura popular, pois é a partir dela que podemos dar conta dos sentidos e significados dessa cultura para seus participantes.
