The purpose of this study is to investigate the experiences civic teachers have of working with motivational teaching with students in lower secondary school. Students' motivation for school and the subject of civic is important for the future. Students who pass compulsory school are given the opportunity of further education and with that the enhanced opportunity of getting a job, which will benefit both society and the individual. Civics is the subject that prepares students for adulthood and becoming democratic citizens. Previous studies point to several general factors that affect students' motivation in school. So, how are teachers working to create motivation in the subject of civic? Through interviews with active teachers with different experiences in teaching civics, I took part in their thoughts and ideas. The socio-cultural analysis of the results from the interviews confirm previous studies: motivation is a multidimensional phenomenon, thus there are no ready-made recipes for how motivating civics education is created. This study shows that teachers are in need of a toolbox of different approaches and working methods to be able to motivate as many students as possible in their teaching. Furthermore, teachers must take their starting point in the students and, based on them, plan and implement their teaching in civic studies.
