Previous issue date: 2010-11-16 / Fundação Escola de Sociologia e Política de São Paulo / This thesis is an analysis of the novel O Mulato (1881) of Aluísio Azevedo (1857-1913) which seeks to study the points of contact work and the author with the Brazilian reality of the nineteenth century. In the proposed study, the central idea is, by analyzing the plot of the novel, defining the scope of the similarities between art, politics and society. With this objective will analyze the approach the author with the isms of his time, such as naturalism, positivism, anticlericalism and republicanism. Still, through internal analysis of O Mulato, networks will be analyzed to formulate that sense sociopolitical typologies for understanding and knowledge of the ambiguities of the narrative, therefore trying to uncover the networks of meaning and strategies of language to the configuration of reality own text. This will provide detailed notions of reality from the fiction of O Mulato in relation to the Brazilian's second reign ends and demonstrate that it is possible to achieve a more general interpretation of the novel in relation to the social structure of the period / Esta dissertação toma por objeto o romance O Mulato (1881) de Aluísio Azevedo
(1857-1913) e por objetivo o estudo dos pontos de contato da obra e do autor com a
realidade brasileira de fins do século XIX. Na proposta do estudo, a ideia central é, por
meio da análise do enredo do romance, delimitar o âmbito das aproximações entre arte,
política e sociedade. Com esse intuito será analisada, também, a relação do autor com os
ismos de seu tempo, tais como o naturalismo, o positivismo, o anticlericalismo e o
republicanismo. Ainda, por meio da análise interna de O Mulato, serão apreciadas
criticamente as redes de sentido sociopolítico que permitam formular tipologias para a
compreensão e o conhecimento das ambiguidades da narrativa, buscando, assim,
desvelar os sentidos e as estratégias da linguagem para a configuração da realidade do
texto. Desse modo, serão aprofundadas noções da realidade da ficção de O Mulato em
relação à realidade brasileira de fins do segundo reinado e será demonstrado que é
possível alcançar uma interpretação mais genérica do romance em relação à estrutura
social do período
