Barns och deras föräldrars upplevelser av smärta under och efter reponering av fraktur i armen

Background: Reduction of a fracture in the forearm can be performed with nitrous oxide to avoid surgery. It can be a both painful and unpleasant procedure for the child. The presence and support of the childs’ parent is significant in painful procedures. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe childrens’ and their parents' experiences of fracture reduction in the fore arm within a time interval of 14 days after the procedure.  Method: A descriptive qualitative interview study with semi structured questions was used. Five children between 9 and 13 years old, and five parents took part in the study. The data was analysed with qualitative content analysis.  Results: Fracture reduction of the forearm with nitrous oxide was experienced in different ways. The pain was described variously, and the children felt fear before the procedure. Waiting for fracture reduction one day after the injury caused anxiety. The effect of nitrous oxide was also experienced differently. When the fracture was manipulated, pain was experienced shortly. According to parents, nitrous oxide was a good pain-relieving method, to avoid surgery. After the procedure both parents and children felt relieved. The children needed pharmacological pain relief afterwards. The information to the parents about pain relief at home was varied. Within a period of two weeks, none of the children had any further pain and they said they could repeat the procedure. Parents considered repeating the procedure for their child, but with more pain relief.  Conclusion: A fracture in the forearm is painful. Waiting for the reduction is scary and makes the child worried. During the procedure the child will experience pain. Afterwards the child and parent feel relieved. Information is needed throughout the process.
