Previous issue date: 2007-12-14 / Care has always been present in the history of humanity and in contemporary nursing it is considered to be a fundamental characteristic. In the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), care occurs
within an environment that is known for its stressful factors, technological equipment, social isolation and discomfort. Whilst the reality of nursing practice in ICU demonstrates the lack
of planned and systematized care, there is an indication that the professionals working in this setting utilize some type of knowledge. Based on that premise, in this study we aim to identify the knowledge that the nurses use in providing care in the ICU. We believe that the identification and characterization of this knowledge, and how it presents itself in practice,
requires a reflective analysis process. Therefore, we utilized a qualitative perspective and Kim?s (1999) investigative methodology of reflective inquiry that is based on the precepts of Action Science proposed by Argyris et al. (1985). The study was conducted with 8 intensive care nurses of a public hospital. Data were collected by means of non-participative observation of the nursing care actions and a semi-structured interview conducted within the reflective mode that focused on the nurses practice in the ICU. The results enabled us no only
to detect that the nurses utilized knowledge and patterns of knowledge acquired or constructed, but to identify them as: scientific, philosophic, religious, empirical, personal,
ethical, and esthetic knowledge. The predominance of the scientific knowledge in the care process suggests that these nurses hold an acquired scientific substance that they utilize to
provide specialized care directed toward critical treatment. The conception of this reality surpasses the theoretical limits, the techniques, and the known facts, and denotes the need for
a reflective process in action to aide in the comprehension of the knowledge involved in the construction of excellent care / O cuidado sempre esteve presente na hist?ria humana e ? considerado uma caracter?stica fundamental na ?rea da enfermagem. No contexto da Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI), ele se concretiza em meio a um ambiente repleto de fatores estressantes, aparelhagens m?ltiplas, distanciamento social e desconforto. A viv?ncia da pr?tica em UTI exp?e uma realidade em que, geralmente, h? falta de uma assist?ncia planejada e sistematizada, todavia, nota-se a exist?ncia de algum saber utilizado pelos profissionais. Apoiados nessa premissa, alvitramos identificar que conhecimentos os enfermeiros utilizam para efetuar sua assist?ncia em UTI.
Acreditamos que para essa identifica??o, e determina??o, de como esses saberes se caracterizam e se apresentam na pr?tica ? essencial uma an?lise reflexiva e, portanto,
utilizamos como metodologia o processo investigat?rio de Kim (1999), com base nos preceitos da Ci?ncia da A??o de Argyris et al. (1985) sob uma abordagem qualitativa. O levantamento dos dados transcorreu mediante observa??o n?o-participativa e entrevista semi-estruturada, numa perspectiva de reflex?o com oito enfermeiros intensivistas de um hospital p?blico. O estudo nos possibilitou detectar, como resultados, n?o somente que os enfermeiros utilizam conhecimentos e padr?es de saber adquiridos ou constru?dos, mas tamb?m identific?-los como: cient?fico, filos?fico, t?cito, popular, religioso, emp?rico, pessoal, ?tico e est?tico. O conhecimento cient?fico destaca-se entre os outros no processo de cuidar, sugerindo, assim, o aporte cient?fico adquirido por esses profissionais para possibilitar uma assist?ncia especializada e direcionada ao tratamento intensivo. A presente an?lise contribui para a Ci?ncia de Enfermagem no sentido de proporcionar a elabora??o de id?ias e construtos derivados da pr?pria pr?tica. A concep??o da realidade da pr?tica extrapola os limites de
teorias, t?cnicas e fatos conhecidos, o que exalta a necessidade de um processo de reflex?o na a??o para a compreens?o dos conhecimentos envolvidos na elabora??o de um cuidado de excel?ncia
