Vikten av delaktighet för skolbarns hälsa : En kvalitativ studie om skolpersonalens erfarenheter och tankar om delaktighet för elever i skolan. / The Importance of Participation for Children in School : A qualitative study of school staff's experiences and reflections about connectivity in school.

Abstract  Background  According to statistics from The Public Health Agency of Sweden (2022), the school system faces new challenges regarding school children's health. Mental health has continuously deteriorated over the years, this, among other things, leads to psychosomatic symptoms which impair the children's school performance and further prospects for the future. However, research shows that students' well-being can be improved through the key factors connectivity and participation, factors where teachers are viewed as enablers.  Aim  The purpose of the study is to increase knowledge about school staff's experiences of participatory processes and their thoughts on how participation can be promoted within the framework of health promotion in schools.  Method  The study is of a qualitative approach and focus group interviews was used as a data collection method. The study was conducted at a primary school in Norrbotten where seven people from the staff group participated in the study. Two focus group interviews were conducted, however, on the same day. A semi-structured interview guide was used and data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis.  Result  The results of the analysis were presented in the order in which the research questions were asked. The analysis of the data material resulted in five categories: embracing the community, contributing to a living everyday process and empowerment through formal decision-making, promoting security and it all starts with appreciation.  Conclusion  This study shows that school staff have several different experiences of participatory processes. These experiences can be paralleled with their thoughts on how participation in health should be promoted. The four areas: community, security, appreciation and empowerment could be distinguished in the respondents' answers. These could partly describe the staff's experiences and partly their visions regarding how participation and health can be promoted. According to this study and previous findings, the participation perspective has been shown to play a major role in the promotion of general public health.
