Depression leads to anxiety, isolation and often self-harming behavior. Adolescents seldom seek help. More research on adolescents is needed. Aim: To elucidate adolescent’s experiences of depression from a family perspective. Method: Systematic review containing 15 peer-reviewed articles published between 2001-2011 that have been analyzed and reviewed. Results: The adolescents did not want to talk about their feelings, of fear that others would not understand. They became isolated and had no will to do homework or partake in social relationships. When contact had been taken with family or friends, the adolescents tended to seek professional care. When the nursing worked, feelings of great relief occurred, but fear of relapse remained. Discussion: It was important that the care showed that they understood the disease and it was essential that the adolescents had someone to talk to that they could trust. Conclusion: Depressed adolescents experienced themselves as being different, seldom contacted with the healthcare and worried about how others would react to their feelings. The family was an important part in the nursing process. Also understanding and respect must be included to remedy the problem.
