O principal objetivo deste trabalho é testar a hipótese de que existe uma relação bicausal entre democracia e liberdade econômica na América Latina, entre 1995 e 2014. A segunda hipótese é que o impacto da democracia sobre a liberdade econômica é maior que o impacto da relação contrária. Metodologicamente, realizou-se uma análise estatística descritiva e inferencial e estimou-se um painel dinâmico pelos métodos Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS), proposto por Parks (1967) e o Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), proposto por Arellano e Bond (1991). Para cada um dos estimadores foram testados três modelos com o Polity IV como variável dependente e a liberdade econômica como independente; e outros 3 modelos com a liberdade econômica como variável dependente e Polity IV como variável independente. O Modelo 1 incluiu todas as variáveis independentes de controle: a lag da variável dependente (Polity -1 ou Liberdade Econômica -1); o PIB per capita; a taxa de crescimento do PIB; a estabilidade política; e o capital humano. O Modelo 2 utilizou como controles a lag da variável dependente e a estabilidade política. Finalmente, o modelo 3 incluiu somente a lag da variável dependente como controle. Os resultados sugerem que existe uma relação bicausal entre democracia e liberdade econômica, mas o impacto da democracia sobre a liberdade econômica é maior que o impacto da relação contrária. / Does exist a bicausal relationship between democracy and economic freedom in Latin America? The main objective of this study is to test the hypothesis that exists a bicausal relationship between democracy and economic freedom in Latin America, between 1995 and 2014. The second hypothesis is that the impact of the democracy on economic freedom is bigger than the impact of the contrary relation. Methodologically, it’s done a descriptive and inferential statistical analysis and estimated a dynamics panel data by the method of Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS), proposed by Parks (1967) and the method of Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), proposed by Arellano and Bond (1991). For each of the mentioned methods three models will be tested with Polity IV as dependent variable and Economic Freedom as independent variable, and another 3 models with the Economic Freedom as dependent variable and Polity IV as independent variable. The Model 1 included all the independent control variables: the lag of the dependent variable (Polity -1 or Economic Freedom -1); GDP per capita; the rate of GDP growth; political stability; and human capital. The Model 2 used as controls the lag of the dependent variable and political stability. Finally, model 3 included only the lag of the dependent variable as control. The results suggest that exists a bicausal relationship between democracy and economic freedom, but the impact of the democracy on economic freedom is bigger than the contrary relation.
